My blood test results for HB at 10 weeks was 12.9 g/dL and then it dropped to 11.6 at 24 weeks. I have not had a ferritin blood test but my GP has prescribed me 210mg Ferrous Fumarate to take 3 times a day. Is this too much? I did have mild anaemia in my first pregnancy at 28 weeks so i don't know if maybe its a preventative this time but is the dose too high?

I also took a lot of iron when deficient in pregnancy. I tried to raise my levels for a month or so with high doses of OTC meds but they didn’t change a thing. High dose proper prescription sorted me out in 2-3 weeks. The only thing to watch out for is high doses might affect your stomach/give you constipation. If you struggle with that, there might be liquid iron for you. Otherwise perfectly safe and fine.x

I’ve just been put on iron and im on 200mg ferrous sulfate. I did a lot of reading and really look at what you shouldn’t have around taking iron, things like dairy, caffeine as they really reduce the absorption. And like @SiberFoxsaid, careful on your stomach too! It can really do a number on your bowel movements. I’m trying to do one meal a day which focuses on good foods for digestion, then the others food with high iron and high vitamin c to boost my absorption as it can take a while to build back up in your body and I’ve been feeling awful so trying to do anything!

Yes, there is no evidence that you absorb any more iron than taking once a day (and actually one tablet alternate days is probably sufficient but then people forget to take).
