Vaginal birth with prolapse?

Hi
I am just looking to see if anyone has had a vaginal birth whilst they have had a bladder prolapse and moreso what the recovery was like? Did the prolapse worsen? Was your pelvic floor recovery hard / long?

I had a vaginal birth in 2024. I never fully recovered in the pelvic floor area but was fine, maybe 80% of pre-baby. But since getting pregnant again I now have a prolapse. Prolapse is hereditary in my family and lots of females have had surgeries.

I have a women's health physio I see regularly who is happy for me to continue my plan to birth vaginally. I will also dicuss at my next consultant appointment.

But would love to hear recovery stories in the meantime!

I had a rectocele (would bulge out of my vagina) after my first baby and a weakened pelvic floor to the point of wetting myself regularly. Worked hard at the physio, after about 12 months I was pretty normal. Got pregnant when baby was 14 months, and prolapse heaviness worsened. Baby born and straight back to how I was pre second pregnancy. No symptoms now. Best of luck!

I had a prolapse reveal itself early in my second pregnancy (it was uterine, my cervix popped out the entrance of my vagina, was awful). My physio said it was probably as a result of my assisted delivery with DC1. I did my pelvic floor exercises religiously (and still do) and followed all the physio's advice and had no issues after birth. I'm now pregnant with my 3rd and no issues with this pregnancy and hoping all will be well after this birth as well. Physio and midwife said vaginal birth shouldn't make existing prolapses any worse. I was told assisted delivery is a real risk factor for prolapse which I only found out afterwards!

Thanks! Yes, I am now having regular physio and doing exercises as much as I can at home (not as easy as I'd like with a crazy toddler). I'm OK if it is bad after birth but as long as I can work on correcting it.

How long until you recovered after baby 2?

Yes, I had an assisted delivery too and my physio mentioned the same about it often causing a prolapse.

I am doing the exercises now but only in the last 2 weeks since starting physio and probably not as much as I should be! I really need to improve.

I was told the same, that to continue my plans for vaginal birth but to keep up my exercises before and after.

Best of luck with baby 3! When are you due?

As soon as she was born it was fine, think it was just the pressure of being pregnant. Second day after she was born I went on a three mile walk baby wearing her, and was fine until the last half mile or so when I felt that heavy feeling, but that was the only time I felt anything. I think it helped that she basically flew out with no effort from me, I couldn't have stopped her if I tried. With my first I had coached pushing on my back as they lost his heartbeat and it was a "get him out now" situation, but with her I was on all fours over the back of the bed and she came in two involuntary pushes.

I had a mild cystocoele and rectocoele after my first vaginal birth (pushed as hard as I could at 4cm for over an hour 🤦🏼‍♀️). Had a vaginal birth the second time and no worsening in symptoms at all. If anything it’s been better because of the women’s health physio I’ve been seeing. Hope all goes well for you .
