Aspirin in pregnancy

Anyone else on aspirin!

This is my second pregnancy on asprin due to miscarriages. I am on 150mg/day 12-36 weeks of pregnancy, same as last pregnancy.

Tonight I read the data sheet, it is not advised to use after 20weeks, but if is prescribed must not take more than 100mg/day in the last 3 months, due to possible damage to baby’s heart or kidneys.

Anyone else noticed this or challenged their consultant?

Wasn't aware of that. It's still a low dose. I was prescribed anticoagulants throughout pregnancy, did they discuss any other options with you?

I was prescribed aspirin during my first pregnancy due to being at higher risk of preeclampsia. I was over 35 and my mum had preeclampsia with her first pregnancy so I was advised to take it until the third trimester. I also questioned if it was safe after reading the medication leaflet. The midwife advised that the dose I was on was low so extremely unlikely to cause adverse effects. I think it's up to the individual to weigh up the risks, however small. I would contact your consultant/midwife to get more advise.

Just to add. I just looked at the old medication box I still have in the cupboard and I was taking 100 mg a day. I would make contact and talk over your concerns.

On aspirin too, same dose. I suppose it’s a balance of risks they’ll be doing, there’s no way the nhs would prescribe something with a higher risk of damaging your child’s kidneys (and therefore costing a lifetime of treatment) than of losing the baby/causing other health issues due to clots.

im always told that nothing is risk free, but that it’s about comparing risks and making a decision based on that. And the advice will be based on many quality studies, and constantly updated.

I took 75mg per day from the start until the end of my 2nd pregnancy to protect against PE. It was experimental ish at the time. I didn’t get PE and there were already loads of studies on it at the time so I was happy to take it at that low dose.

(I took it in the first and second trimester with my 1st child at same dose but developed PE towards the end of pregnancy)

so I’d ask the consultant for reassurance. About safety and dosage.
it’s well researched so they should be able to reassure you.

I'm on 150mg too until 36 weeks. I'm surprised that it says that as I think it's a very standard dose for pregnancy!

Which data sheet are you referring to? As Aspirin does not list pregnancy use so doesn't have a pregnancy specific data sheet in the box. The NHS/fertility specialists use it 'off-label' after a lot of research was done into its use in pregnancy. The common guidance from the midwife and if anyone googles 'Aspirin - pregnancy - nhs' on any of those pdf hospital sheets that come up, is use until 36 weeks. Most people are on 150mg, some on 75mg, it just depends who prescribed it to you and the specific policy of that hospital/maternity unit.
