Could someone please reassure me about my baby's head being engaged

When I saw my midwife four weeeks ago at 36 weeks she told me that the baby was very very low and that the birth was imminent. She said that she would be very surprised to see me at my next two week check and there was no way it would go to the due date (15th June). She wrote on my notes 'fixed and deeply engaged'. As she didn't divide the engagement into fifths I assume that she couldn't feel any of it's head. She also said that it was too deep to dis-engage and engage again.
Anyway nothing happened. I saw her again at 38 weeks and she said that she cannot believe that I am holding the baby in. I am now nearly 40 weeeks and worried that if the baby has been so deeply engaged for at least a month why it hasn't come out !! It is a second baby and so it is apparently rare for it to engage before labour begins.
Will it be squashed ? Could it be stuck ? Could it's head be getting squashed ?
Daft questions I am sorry but I am worried that it has been so low for so long.
Thanks for your help.

Hi - no answers for you, I'm afraid, but also interested in this as I'm 37 weeks - so not as far down the line as you - but also with my 2nd baby which midwife said was so deeply engaged, she couldn't feel the head it at all. She didn't seem to think that labour was imminent, though, when I joked that it would "come tomorrow".

What happened with your first? My first also engaged around 37 weeks and I remember a midwife telling me birth was imminent, but I went to 40 weeks.

I don't think it can be squashed or its head stuck, though - you'd only find out about that during active labour, surely. Are you getting any twinges yet?? Hang on in there and try not to worry (as I am!) .

Hi. I am glad that it is not just me !!!
Well with my first my waters broke at 36 weeks and my contractions started and he was born 17 hours later. He was perfectly healthy though. Just decided to come early so I didn't ever get to this stage.
I would have been ok if the midwife hadn't said that it was so deeply engaged a month ago. I just keep worrying that it's getting squashed (stupid I know !!) and why has it gone so low so early if it's got no intentions of coming out
No twinges yet. Thanks for replying and good luck !

my ds2 was deeply engaged too for the last few weeks of my pregnancy and i got the whole any minute now thing from the mws too. In the end we went 2 weeks overdue and had to be induced. MW broke my waters which she said were the toughest she'd ever come across - leather and old boots were mentioned - labour started immediately (had been having regular BHs for weeks anyway) and bub was born 3.5 hours later FANTASTIC

There is no way anyone can tell when your baby will be born. the good news if if bub is so deeply engaged the head will be working on your cervix as we speak and there's every possibility of a quick labour once you get going

O and its a snug fit but remember the head will now be protected nicely by your pelvis so no danger of squashing

Good luck...how exciting for you, wish I was there again

Well, that's made me feel better - thanks Pheebe!

Thanks Pheebe. I would LOVE a 3.5 hour labour
The squashing thing - I was worried that it would be my pelvis that was squashing it's head if it's that low. Everytime I sit down I try and keep my legs apart just in case lol. I guess the fluid around it protects it. Either that or it's going to come out with a very funny shaped head .
