Dilated Kidney not resolved

Hello,

Has anyone had a baby whose dilated kidney did not resolve by the next scan and went on to be born with it?

I’m 32 weeks. They noticed the dilated kidney at 20 weeks and rebooked me in for 32 weeks (today) to have a look again. There’s been no change. So it’s not got bigger but it’s also not resolved / got smaller.

I am booked in again for 2 weeks time but with no change over 12 weeks, I am expecting the same result to be honest.

All I’ve been told is that he will need to be on antibiotics and have a scan but nothing else and I’ve had to stop googling as the anxiety is too much. Anyone experienced this? What did it look like after baby was born?

Yes - my first. It was one kidney at 37 weeks and both at 39. They were moderately dilated I think. He had an ultrasound on the day he was born and it was too early to tell so he was put on prophylactic trimethoprim and had another at 4 weeks and they hadn’t resolved. He had an MCUG at 4 months which ruled out VUR. One side then resolved on its own, maybe around one year and the other has reduced a lot but hasn’t fully resolved yet. He’s 8 now and had his last ultrasound a year ago. He came off the trimethoprim at age 1 and has never had any problems.

If it hadn’t been noticed on that growth scan we would have possibly never known. He’s thriving. I really struggled with anxiety about it but hopefully this will help you feel better. If they can find a cause, there are good treatments I believe.

Hi, yes last year my baby was found to have duplex kidneys around 20 weeks and moderately dilated upper parts of the kidneys (which were still a bit dilated on a scan just after birth).

I was extremely worried about it in the pregnancy (the hormones didn’t help!), but now I’m really glad they picked up on it because it just means we can make sure it doesn’t cause her any issues.

She is now 3 months and really thriving! She’s on prophylactic antibiotics and will have further scans to check the kidneys and urine flow. The doctor said in the majority of cases it doesn’t need intervention. Even if it does it’s very fixable so I’m not too worried even if she did need a surgery for it.

Hang in there - I know how worrying this can be but the scans are so good nowadays that they’re picking up on this type of thing more and more. We of course never want anything to be wrong in a scan but I’ve heard that if anything is, it’s good that it’s this because the outlook and treatments are very good. Sending you all the very best.
