Safe Hair Dyes in Pregnancy

Singingintherain · 13/06/2008 12:43

I have read that it should be safe to use hair dayes in pregnancy. But after 2 mc's, I want to be as safe as possible. (I did colour my hair a week before my last mc)

I have been told there are dyes that are safe to use, but does anyone know of any brands that are more natural.

Any help appreciate. Thank you.

there is one that holland and barratt do, can't remember the name but my mum uses it and they are good. I just waited til after the first trimester and have been fine - I understand the fear but dyeing your hair did not cause your mc...

I have been to supermartket and can not find anything that looks natural enough to use. They are not in English so it is hard to understand.

I am looking for one that is low in both Amonia and Peroxide, or is completely natural.

Still looking, any suggestions.

Henna is completely natural, but there are limited shades obviously. I've used LUSH henna throughout my pregnancy, theirs comes in red, brown, black and reddy-brown (Marron). But there is some mention of not using it if you've previously used chemical dyes on your hair, or not being able to use chemical dyes over the henna afterwards. Not sure how true this is though...
Hope you find something you like. You can always use natural plants yourself to get certain effects, but I wouldn't know what to suggest as don't know what hair colour you have/want

I was also nervous about this (and everything else) following a mc last summer -despite the fact that I'd had my hair dyed and highlighted several times in my previous four healthy pregnancies!

In the end I didn't dye my hair until I was 20+ weeks and found/used a product called Surya Henna Cream on the internet.

Link here www.chemistdirect.co.uk/surya-henna-dark-brown-cream_1_6285.html although if you do a search for Surya you will find a number of online shops stock it. As far as I know there are two versions - the powder and the cream. I don't know if the cream is 100% natural/organic but it does say that it doesn't contain any of the "big" chemicals associated with hair dyes like peroxide, ammonia or heavy metals.

I chose the cream for convenience sake and can recommend it, although it is only semi-permanent. Also I only wanted to cover some greys so chose the shade nearest to my own colour (dark brown) so I don't know if it would work to change hair colour. It did cover the greys and my hair was a nice rich colour and in nice condition.

Healthfood shops sell naturtint and you can get Daniel Field's water colour range from sainsburys. Both these products aren't too chemical laden (certainly no ammonia or peroxide) and are very effective. I'm not sure about resorcinol and the other nasties though.

I would still use them sparingly and probably wait until after 12wks.

I have got very dark hair with quite a bit of grey so I'm going to be looking like a badger for the next 5.5 weeks!

Thanks,

I tried all weekend to look for another dye, but found nothing. I bought one and contacted the manufacturer, but found in small print that it does contain peroxide.

I thought that I would leave it and went to the Hairdressers. I decided to have all my hair cut short from the bob that I had, keeping my long fringe to one side.

I asked the Hairdresser what he would do and he said "we will dye it for you". I was rather worried and decided not to bother. By cutting it short and having a few layers put in it, it looks better than all smooth. When it was smooth the grey was more obvious. By having layers put in it, it is not so obvious when I scrunch it up. I was really pleased with it and everyone has commented that it has took 10 years off.

It felt lovely to say to people that I wanted to colour it, but did not dare to as I was pregnant. I am pleased that I did not for now. I am going to visit England next month and see if I can get some shampoo ones.

I am actually dark brown in colour and have been colouring my hair black for many years. As the black grows out I do not get routes as most of the black fades to a dark brown anyway, so at least routes are not a problem, just grey strands. If anything I will have highlights put in.
