NHS 8 week appointment with midwife booked for week 14??

Hi all,

I self referred to a hospital and got my 8 week appointment (which I believe is supposed to be at 10 weeks latest) confirmed for when I’m going to be 14 weeks.
from what I understand this is more of an admin appointment and they check your weight, family history etc but I also think they take some bloods and I’m worried doing it 4 weeks late might cause problems with diagnosing things?
can you let me know how these appointments went for you? I’m half guessing they might be relaxed with the timing as I’m coming from IVF so they know I’ve been under observation but it’s still making me uncomfortable.
saving grace is they have booked the 12 week scan when I’m actually 12 weeks so I suppose that’s the big one.
thank you

That is really annoying - I think it would mean that your ‘12 week’ screening bloods would be back much later (checking T21/18/13). It is similar ish to what happened to me - I had this appointment at 11 weeks including the blood draw and then I had the 12 week scan the following week at 12 weeks. My bloods weren’t back in time so the sonographer couldn’t give us the ‘official’ ruling that everything was okay re the Trisonomies, they could only do the Nuchal measurement and say it looked low risk. I then had to wait another 4 days to get the bloods for the official confirmation.

I’m also IVF. I’d probably phone them on Monday and explain the predicament, they might just have calculated things incorrectly?

@Hopeandfaith1990 ive been trying to call them all of last week and nobody picks up! Emailed them too, no response. Managed to get ahold of someone in the hospital and they said they never pick up and it’s best to just walk in but I choose a hospital that’s 45min away so not just easy for me to rock up and walk in… so annoying. I did think it might cause problems!! Thanks for letting me know

It might vary by NHS Trust, but I’ve found this useful to know what is expected at each appointment and whether to bring my husband along, e.g for scans. No point in him taking time off work for a blood test and some measurements.

@AlmostTime thank you! It’s the bloods that I’ve been concerned about as I’ve been told by a friend who’s a couple of weeks ahead of me that the rest is just plain admin. I actually managed to reach the hospital this morning (if anyone has problems reaching st Thomas’ ping me I’ve now got a hack 😂) and the lady said it’s not a problem, they’ll do my bloods on the 12 week scan and I can see the midwife as scheduled as 14 weeks as all we’ll do is chat about birth options and she’ll take some measurements. So very relieved!
