TW 5 weeks and bloody discharge

Pregnant for the first time, 5 weeks roughly yesterday, tests have been progressing and had a 3+ week today. However, last night I noticed some mild pink discolouration in discharge. Not fresh blood.

I immediately was convinced that was it, it’s a chemical, it’s going to start now. That was at 7pm and had nothing else until now (9:30am) where I’m having some light pink discharge again.

Was very upset last night but now I’m just confused. Is this definitely over? I hope this doesn’t worry anyone else I didn’t want to post in any of the September due threads. Thanks

May be fine - both my pregnancies I had all kinds of bleeds and things, all from the cervix not uterus, babies fine.

I had a big bleed with second pregnancy around the same time 5 weeks which I thought was a period so didn’t realise i was pregnant at all oops. VERY surprised another 6 weeks later (when my next period didn’t arrive) to find out I was 11 weeks pregnant

Depending on where you live you can go to an early pregnancy unit for a scan x

Thank you. If not heavy bleeding by Monday I will call. The not knowing 100% is making this horrid I just have terrible anxiety and dreading going to the bathroom.

Most EPUs won’t scan before 6 weeks unless there’s a possible threat of an ectopic. At 5 weeks there often really isn’t anything to see so won’t help ease anxiety and they won’t be able to confirm a viable pregnancy.

Thanks, it’s ok I wouldn’t expect a scan this early or anything. I guess i thought for advice. As I’m now past 5 weeks, and my tests are measuring a high level of HCG, I don’t think it would class as a chemical? My tests are really strong.

still had light intermittent discharge today, only noticeable when wiping and I’m looking intensely but doesn’t feel great’

In my current pregnancy I had intermittent bleeding that filled me with dread, in all colours! From about 5 weeks onwards I think. I think it was partly my cervix bleeding (it becomes more friable during pregnancy, I had what was like a small nosebleed of fresh blood that self isolated) and then pink and or brown bleeding for weeks after, that was a sub chorionic hematoma slowly resolving. I’ve had two mcs previously, and bleeding wasn’t actually the main indicator for these. In one I did have a slight bleed that was short lived, but I didn’t miscarry for several weeks after so it was likely unrelated. MC itself ramps up in bleeding, and was weirdly granular in the run up (by then I already knew the pregnancy wasn’t viable so had been waiting). I say all this to just show that pink on wiping does not have to mean bad news at all, it can be a “mechanical” bleed unrelated to the health of the pregnancy.

your EPU will (hopefully) give you a reassurance scan in a couple of weeks, you can call them for verbal reassurance just now (mine were so kind) and they can book a scan for when they’d expect to see something.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply! I’m sorry to hear of the challenges you’ve had.

It’s now 2.5 days later and I’ve still had some coloured discharge, only when wiping after using the loo, but nothing has gotten worse or increased.

What a bloody (literally) stress!!

It’s def good that nothing has increased, I still urge you to reach out to epu who can organise a scan a bit later, it’s really good to be on their books and they can offer you such helpful support. Let’s each have many uneventful pregnancy weeks ahead ♥️

Hello! I had exactly the same at 8 weeks, and lasted for a few days. Got referred by my GP to the EPU who confirmed everything ok, and prescribed progesterone to help maintain the pregnancy due to a previous miscarriage.

Even if it's light and hasn't increased, I'd still recommend trying to get a referral.

An update and thanks for everyone who commented you did really help me through this weekend.

I spoke with my EPU today and they said they weren’t concerned and think it’s possibly extended implantation bleeding. She talked to me about taking it easy for the next couple of weeks and I said I have been moving and renovating the past week, which was a lot of heavy lifting, which she felt could also have exacerbated it.

as it’s just mostly brown discharge and no pain or other symptoms, just to see how it goes and call if anything changes significantly!
