eating salad on holiday?

I'm off on holiday in a week, very much looking forward to some relaxation before baby arrives. We are going to the Canaries where it will be warm and I usually enjoy eating salads for lunch there. Is this risky during pregnancy as I can't guarantee that the salad leaves have been washed properly?

I wouldn't eat any salad leaves I hadn't washed myself if I was pregnant. There's plenty of other salad items that are safe.

I’m usually extremely chill over stuff like this but I wouldn’t even brush my teeth with tap water on holiday (always gives me the shits) so I absolutely wouldn’t eat salad that has been washed in tap water.

Thanks both. If you were going to Tenerife, what would you eat for lunch options? There's so much I already can't eat - cheeses, cold meats, certain types of fish etc. I am not sure what I will do

Im away next weekend with some friends I haven’t told yet (will only be 7-8 weeks) so I’m planning to stick to cooked food. Not ideal in warm weather, but I think it will be the easiest way to be safe.

Something hot and cooked through would be my choice.

You should be ok with hard cheese like Manchego, surely?

tartyflette · 06/02/2026 16:35

And other vegetsble salads like tomato, peppers, cucumber?

I wouldn't eat salad out while pregnant anywhere.

In Spain pregnant women are advised not to eat salad unless it's been specifically sanitised, not just washed in water- they are much hotter on this stuff than we are. You could always ask whether this has been done (the word is amukina). It's only in the UK that women aren't warned about it, on the basis that we historically eat less fruit and veg here and so the benefits of increased veg outweigh the risks.
