Anyone else had PROM twice?

Hi,

Currently pregnant with number 3.

Both previous pregnancies ended with PROM, first at 40+4, second at 37+0.

Has anyone else had this? What happened in your next pregnancy?

My concern is it will happen again, even earlier. Midwife doesn't think it's a concern but has referred me to a consultant. First appointment is at 32 weeks.

If second PROM had been a day earlier it seems like it would be treated completely differently!

Thanks :)

What makes you think you’ve had PROM? Who has indicated you’d be at risk? 40+4 is full term and not a premature rupture of the membranes. 37+0 is term, and also not premature rupture of the membranes.

I suffered PROM at 32+6 and my baby was born at 33+2. I lost my first son to prematurity so you can imagine it was absolutely terrifying. The hospital team were much more chill about it than I thought they’d be. They gave me the first dose of steroids straight away and said they’d monitor for 24 hours. If no labour, they’d send me home. Reduced movements began within 12 hours so they gave me a second dose of steroids then instead of 24 hours apart in case they needed to act fast. I went into labour at 2am 33+1 and baby was born at 7 am via cat 1 emergency section under general anaesthetic.

Two others in my due date group had technically premature births; one at 35+4 and one at 36+2. Neither needed special care and their births were treated as normal. Their babies went straight to the ward with them and they went home within 48 hours. Experiences vary, naturally, but unless there are concerns with baby (eg measuring small, low APGR scores at birth, etc.), it’s unlikely a birth near term would require too much deviation from the norm unless there were other complications like the above mentioned.

If you’re facing extremely early premature birth, you would be on the preterm team’s radar from early on. Unless the weeks you’ve said above are not accurate though, you don’t have any risk factors. You had a full term birth and a term birth, which are both perfectly normal.

Surely PROM by definition cannot happen at 40 weeks? Unless you mean something else? Most women’s membranes rupture when they go into labour, so if this happened at 40 weeks then it’s not PROM just.. labour? 37 weeks is nearer the line but still not premature at all.

This happened to me twice- 38+ 3 and 39+1. They both resulted in emcs so for my third and final baby, I had a planned section. Funnily enough she was delivered at 39+2 and I had no signs of PROM. They broke my waters on the table.

prom is prolonged rupture of membranes

Pprom is premature rupture of membranes

Were you induced op as a result?

No, PROM is premature rupture of membranes - premature in this case means without labour starting.

PPROM is pre-term (ie before 37 weeks) premature rupture of membranes.

Neither time actually.

First came naturally after about 36 hours. Waters broke at night so induction was scheduled for the exact time she was born. Almost didn't make it in time, no regular contractions.

Second, they decided heartbeat was a little high to induce so has EMCS

@KittyFantastica

I'm so sorry for your loss ❤️.

PROM was diagnosed twice as waters broke but labour didn't start.

I don't have any known risk factors for it, but I think there's only a 1/100 chance of it happening.

If water's had broken 14 hours earlier with baby 2, it would have been pPROM and I'd be on a different pathway.

I didn’t have it twice but with DD2 my waters broke at 34 weeks.

I didn’t go into labour and I was induced at 37 weeks with no other complications.

Ahh, I'm glad all was ok. That's also reassuring- thank you.

We're you home for those 3 weeks?

Yeah. I stayed in hospital for two nights so they could monitor me and give me some steroids - I think I read that the first 48hrs after waters breaking are the most high risk for going into premature labour.
They started me on some antibiotics but I was sent home with the rest of the 10 day course. I had to com back in for extra scans to check water levels, and blood tests to check for infection. And I was under instructions to come back right away if I had any signs or symptoms of infection (fever, nausea, feeling unwell etc). But it was all good.

Hi op. I’ve had this 3 times. 23 weeks(went into labour at 29 weeks), 29 weeks, went into labour a week later, and 35+6 and had baby the same day. My last pregnancy I had at 38 weeks and had to have my water broken. All are healthy kids/adults now.

Hey,

Thanks for sharing.
So glad all your babies were fine; the 29 weeker must have been very scary, especially since it was a while ago!

I know I just need to relax and see what happens but it's hard!
