Frank breech and measuring ahead at almost 34 weeks

Hi ladies

wondering if anyone has any experience of having a frank breech baby measuring ahead which has ended up turning ?

im 33+5 measuring just over 3 weeks ahead and above the 99th centile. She’s also frank breech to boot. I know measurements aren’t always accurate but wondering if anyone has been in same position and baby has turned?

doing all the usual exercises/inversions etc and would love to avoid section if possible.

thanks

Hi there it's a midwife. Has anyone in your hospital does ECV? I think it needs to be done around 36 weeks. It has up to 70% success, depending on the practitioner's experience. Alternatively many independent midwives are skilled in breech vaginal deliveries

My 4th baby was frank breech and I tried everything but she didn’t move. By this point I imagine your baby could be stuck. My baby was, she couldn’t havemoved if she tried. I had a section at 39 weeks. Her hips were ok but she did have scans after birth to make sure. The pregnancy was awful you have my sympathy.

I had to google frank breech. I had one! Undiagnosed, first baby. Had an assisted forceps vaginal delivery, with epidural.
The delivery was slow but all ended well. This was 40 years ago, so I imagine things will be better now.

Thanks for your reply. Yeah I don’t see her moving all my scans she’s went between transverse and breech. Will try my best to get her moving but don’t have much hope. Glad to hear all was ok with your wee one ☺️

Wow that’s amazing I take my hat off to you! I don’t know if I could go for that to be fair, especially with her measuring so far ahead 🙈

At 36 my baby was frank breech, measuring above the 99th centile and had a bit of extra fluid - they offered us an ECV on Christmas eve which I declined due to the small risk it might end up with an emergency section, so instead they booked us in for 30th December, only to find he’d flipped himself and was now head down! Booked in for an induction the next day, and we welcomed our baby boy on New Year’s Day.

The only baby turning technique I had the energy for was holding a cool pack at the top of my bump - no idea if it actually worked but it definitely made him more active.

Anyone else think op's baby is called Frank?
Never heard of the term sorry!

IsThisLifeNow · 13/01/2026 09:29

Yes my second was breech, and big. They tried an ECV, but it didn't work, wasn't the most pleasant experience I'll warn you. Also tried acupuncture, the spinning babies stretches but had what was termed an emergency section at 38+4 I think. It was only an emergency because my waters broke at home on their own and my elective section wasn't until 40 weeks.

He was 10lb 6, trying to outdo his older brother, who wad 10lb 11, but was 11 days overdue. God knows what weight he'd have gotten to if he'd gone to his due date!

PardonMe3 · 13/01/2026 09:33

I had 2 footling breech. One was delivered by emergency csection and the second was delivered by a planned one. After the first I was told I have a retroverted bicornuate (heart shaped) uterus.

OutOfVecnasReach · 13/01/2026 09:45

Dc3 was frank breech for almost my whole pregnancy and it got to 39 weeks and baby was still frank breech, so on their advise they booked me for a c-section one day before my due date. Day of the section the midwife felt my stomach, baby still breech, I got a canula put it, got in my gown and stockings for surgery, and then before I was wheeled to surgery the consultant said it was standard to give one last ultrasound at the bedside to make 100% sure baby was still breech, she said the team were confident baby was still frank breech but it was purely procedure. Lo and behold in those 10 minutes baby had flipped to head down. Absolutly crazy! They then sent me home and I had a spontaneous ‘Natural’ vaginal delivery the next day. They said as baby had flipped head down they weren’t concerned they would flip back to breech.
All that to say that although it is rare baby can flip at any point even full term.

GKG1 · 13/01/2026 09:53

dc2 was breech at 32wk, and my midwife recommended moxibustion- she said it had a good evidence base. Chinese medicine to do with the positive and negative poles of the body, a little charcoal stick was burned near my pinkie toe. Who knows if it helped but was relaxing! I didn’t feel her turn but by 37wk she had turned.

I also did all the inversions from spinning babies website, tried to avoid sitting slouchy, all fours a lot, etc. For me I wouldn’t have done ECV, I think it would be quite frightening for baby, I’d rather have had a section, but I know it works for some.

Popsiclepants · 13/01/2026 09:53

This is outing as I tell everyone this story but I put frozen peas on my bump where baby's head was for 5 mins or so and he flipped! This was about 30 weeks.

It’s a girl and can assure you it’s not her name 😂

Thanks so much for all of your replies.

good to know there’s still time for her to turn but think I’ll decline the ecv if shes too comfortable.

will definitely try the techniques mentioned in the meantime 🤞🏼

DD2 was breech/transverse up until about 38 weeks when midwife said she had turned. She measured big but not as ahead as yours. I went for several osteopath sessions to make some space in my pelvis (make sure to get someone who specialises in pregnancy) and moxibustion was next on my list - it sounds a bit wishy washy but is recommended by some NHS trusts.

She came quickly in a water birth at 4.5kg.

Ohwelldone · 18/01/2026 19:49

Im 34 weeks now, I had a scan at 32 weeks, baby is also frank breech at all the scans, they dont seem worried atm but im in for another growth scan at 36 weeks so I guess we will discuss it then if he's still breech. I think he is sideways facing and bringing his legs down every so often though because I definitely feel kicks in one of my hips a lot of the time
I may have to try the frozen peas on the top of the bump if hes not moved by 36 weeks because id rather avoid a c section 😅 xx

Cosleepingadvice · 18/01/2026 20:19

DD2 was frank breech. I declined ECV and booked an ELCS but in the meantime tried all the old tips to get her to turn herself (although not moxibustion as I was already past the sweet spot for it). I did try spinning babies. I had a scan at 39+1 where she was still breech, felt this really strange pain at 39+2 and at 39+3 I went into spontaneous labour and she was head down! So pretty sure she turned the day before. When she was born, the midwife commented that her cord was very long, so im glad I declined ECV, as I have sometimes wondered if just she and the cord were not well positioned together. Im glad she worked it out on her own (and at nearly 2y she is actually quite a stubborn and independent child! Was clearly always going to be this way 🫣)

Happydays54321 · 25/01/2026 16:41

Thanks all for sharing your experiences. Back for another scan tomorrow so we shall see if my attempts have worked!
