Pre -eclampsia in 2nd pg

MOLLYDOLLY · 24/01/2005 15:41

New to this but have read some really interesting stuff here - would like advice - had severe pre-eclampsia in first pg ending in emergency cs at 29 wks (dd now 3 yrs and fine) and me in intensive care for 3 days. Now 15 wks with no.2 and beginning to panic about pre-eclampsia. Also, consultant and midwives pretty rubbish. Started at 23 wks with swelling, bp and protein came later. Anyone with any advice/experience on this - I fear this worry is ruining this pg for me and dh and dd.

Yes, that quite often is the case. Not entirly sure why though. In hands, probably less swelling in the hand you use most.

How did it go with the consultant, MollyDolly? I have my 21 wk scan on Friday and a MW appointment on Wed this week, but don't need to see the consultant again until 36 weeks to plan the C-Section. I wish I shared their optimism that I will get that far...... Still, I think this will be a 'self run' pregnancy by the looks of it.....

Fraid to say I had it with both my pregnancies: 38 weeks with my dd1 (induced - she was 51bs) asked for Consultant who deals with high risk pregnancies the second time (dd was born in the States) and she called me in about 20 weeks and said that as dd was small for full term they would be monitoring me from 30 weeks, weekly. I didn't get to that stage as on my 28 week check up I was admitted with HBP and protein and had a month of bed rest and eventually metadopa (sp?) the only bp drug you can take in pregnancy. Scanned daily and more or less perm. on a monitor, bloods taken every day. DS was born by planned c section at 32 weeks (31bs) and had 2 months in scbu (he wasn't growing due to the placenta packing up). Afterwards I read APEC's website and realised that you can have extra appointments if you have had Pre-Eclampsia before - I forget which ones they recommend you have extra it is around the late 20's-30's stage, they recommend you go more or less weekly for bp checkups with the midwife. Hope it all goes smoothly for you the second time, my mother had it both pregnancies (worse with her first, my brother, must be something about boys!) Make sure that you highlight your concerns with your GP and midwife and see if they can get you the best consultant at your hospital - you do not have to have the same one you saw last time and also see if you can book in for weekly checks of the bp, it really shouldn't be a problem

bump for mollydolly

beachyhead · 20/04/2005 13:58

where are you up to now, MollyDolly? I'm at 21 weeks and counting

Peachyclair · 20/04/2005 14:37

Hiya.

I used to volunteer on a phone line for pre-eclmapsia, so I have some knowledge.

Basically, PET (pre-eclamptic toxaemia) usually only first pregnancy, but I have certainly come across cases of second, third or more. Even one or two 'not until the second pf'.

Yous hould have care as if you were at risk in this pregnancy- I did in my seconf. Chances are though you'll be OK.

re-read that. not how to type it apparently. oops

Mollydolly · 21/04/2005 10:22

Hi all and thanx for all the advice.

Am now at 28 wks and all is well. My BP is the same as it was when I booked in wih my GP at 5 wks pg so that counts as no rise. I am seeing my mw weekly and having a gowth scan on 27/4 and seeing consultant on 28/4. One week to go and I am in new territory having had dd at 29 wks - wish me luck!!

MollyDolly

Glad to hear that all is well and that you are having weekly checks,

beachyhead · 16/05/2005 11:02

How are you doing Molly Dolly - you must be at about 32 weeks now - very safe territory - I'm at 25 and had 1+ of protein Thursday - Sunday and I swear, I thought they were going to put me in hospital.....bp slightly raised and so I'm going back for PET tests for liver function tomorrow (they did them Friday as well) Wish me luck - baby's growth is fine though!

Mollydolly · 18/05/2005 12:37

Beachyhead - I'm doing OK but had a scare on friday - midwife got trace of protein and very high bp and so was sent to hospital. Like you I thought "this is it" but when I got there, had no protein and bp was back down to 130/80, trace for baba was fine, and bloods came back fine, so they sent me home that night. Saw m/w yesterday and still ok. Am 32 wks today and am thrilled, but still a little anxious. Hope you are ok, post to let us know - anyone heard from whimsy lately?

Morning ladies,

I am 22+3 weeks pregnant and first pregnancy.

I am here looking for some guidance or maybe somebody to share their personal experiences with me please as I am worried sick.

I went into triage last night following some abdominal pain (luckily the pain did not seem to be anything preg related) but they also did some swabs, check if my cervix was closed (was) and a urine sample. My urine sample was tested and came back 2+ for protein.

My blood pressure was slightly increased than my last appointment but they said it wasn't abnormal.
They were going to send my urine and swabs off to the lab for proper testing and so the actual mg of protein could be measured.

I don't think this is a UTI as I haven't had pain in the usual places I would when I have a UTI and I only need the toilet as normal. The doctor did mention a possible sign for pre eclampsia and to be honest at this stage is has me absolutely worried sick incase it is this brewing or already there.

What is the likelihood of it being pre eclampsia at this stage in the 2nd trimester? If it is, what would the result be? Is the pregnancy likely to carry on healthy with monitoring or should I worry?

Thanks ladies!

Hi, this is me from the original thread and hope @Mollydolly might come along too.

They should increase monitoring now, mainly due to the protein in the urine sample. As in the original thread, you could try calling APEC to find out who the preeclampsia specialist is in your area. It's always worth getting on their radar. Ask the midwife if you can have protein sticks at home, or maybe a blood pressure monitor which you can get from Boots.

It could be a number of things, preeclampsia amongst them, but now you are aware, you can insist on more checks and monitoring.

My 2005 pregnancy made it through to 38 weeks (the latest I'd ever got through) and has just gone to uni!

Let me know how it goes and hopefully some more recent cases will join this thread as I'm sure treatment has moved on since then.

beachyhead · 29/09/2023 19:37

@lmp69 let us know how it is going?

Jandob · 29/09/2023 20:17

Less likely with 2nd pg if you have same partner. But they should be diligent with checks. I used to remind them at checkups. Go regularly and schedule more if you are worried. It is a placental problem but can damage you too.
