Worried about Combined Screening Results

Hi all, I am just looking for some reassurance as I have all of sudden become so anxious! Im currently 17 weeks pregnant. I’m based in the UK and at my 12 week scan (where I was actually 13 weeks measuring a few days ahead) I had the combined screening test. NT came back as 2.3mm and scan looked fine. I the had bloods taken and got the results a week later. My results were 1/520 for down syndrome and 1/5000 for Edward’s and Patau's. Classed as low risk and no further tests needed. My PAPPA A was also 0.81 and classed as normal.

I never gave this a second thought or worry and recently had a 16 week private gender scan. She took a few measurements, confirmed the gender and didn’t raise anything suspicious. Everything in the report seems normal including size, head circumference, blood flow etc.

However, I recently came across a video of a woman saying her results for T21 were 1/44000. I’ve also asked friends who have had 1/5000 which I think is the new parameters (the lowest risk result you can receive is 1/5000). I didn’t realise women were getting such lower risk results compared to mine and this has made me incredibly anxious about my results. I don’t know if I am overreacting but I have been beside myself with anxiety now thinking the worse despite not given any reason to be concerned by professionals.

Just for context I’m 30 years old, test was carried out at exactly 13 weeks gestation and this is my first pregnancy.

Now I’m so nervous for my 20w anomaly scan dreading something is going to be wrong. Can anyone offer me any reassurance? Thank you.

Remember that a 1/520 risk is 0.19% chance of your baby having DS. When you think of it like that, the fact your baby has a 99.81% chance of not having DS - it is a low risk.

They take a lot of things into the risk including your age height and weight (so if you are in your 30’s or and especially 40’s you will be classed as a higher risk) if you are over weight or obese your risk is higher and your height is also a factor.

The fact your scan came back as normal and your results have come back low risk I would say not to worry too much x

Thanks so much for this! I’m a healthy weight and in my BMI but I am short (5ft). I didn’t realise these played a factor. Thank you putting it this way definitely makes it feel less worrying x

How old are you OP? What do you weigh?

My second pregnancy the odds were lower than that- I think 1 in 300 for Downs (which is still very low) but I was in my mid 30s and overweight. Baby completely fine. A friend had similar and did the NIPT to reassure her and then got very low odds. I think the way they calculate the NHS one is quite by the numbers with age etc.
I'm not an expert but I think they would see something on a 16 week scan and certainly a 20 week scan.

I’m 30, 56kg and around 5ft!

You can do the NIPT if you are worried, it's standard in lots of countries. But your odds are still very low.

If you are mega worried then nipt test but they can be expensive, you are only a few weeks from your 20 week scan I would just let your midwife know you’re feeling anxious and hopefully she can ease your mind a bit. Remember at 20 week scan they will do a
thoroughcheck so hopefully that helps x

My risk was 1/330 for downs syndrome. I'm currently 31 weeks and I'm pretty certain baby doesn't have it going by my 4d scan at 28 weeks, we could see her features well and no sign of downs!! I know I won't know 100% til she's born and I was worried like you at first but now I'm really not, if your NT and pap a were fine it's very unlikely. You've got better odds than me, try not to worry!!

Dolphindances · 11/01/2026 06:28

I was 1/390 at 38
Have had 3D scans and anatomy - all look OK

Hi OP,
your Papp A is fine- anything lower than 0.4 MoM is classed as low.
and your NT is also fine it’s between 1-3.5mm in the UK

for context I am 35 with twins. One twin is 1.4 and other is 1.5 NT. my bloods will be the same and that 0.1mm difference meant one baby was 1 in 3497 and the other baby was 1 in 3948 so almost 500 difference.
If you are worried then you can pay for a NIPT Iona/harmony test (non invasive) around £400.
my friend was 31 and got a score of 1 in 192 because her NT was on the higher end of normal. Baby was fine.
Hope this reassures you.
