I never really considered this until someone mentioned it to me. Baby due in couple of weeks and I was going to buy a venetian blind for the nursery.

What do you think?

yes, yes, yes! Although I wouldn't worry if you don't get one immediately as to begin with babies will sleep anywhere. Really useful with light evenings as when it's dark, our bodies know it's sleep time.

You won't need it straight away, but next spring and summer, it will be worht it's weight in gold!

bubblagirl · 12/06/2008 11:19

as babies they cannot tell difference between day and night until 8 weeks then i would say definatly a black out blind

other wise they wake when the sun cmes up at an awkward hour dont go back to sleep as convinced its a sociable hour and this will go on for years

black out blind for sure

MrsBadger · 12/06/2008 11:20

you don't need a blackout blind

worth buying later if you find the baby wakes up at odd hours because of the sun but not yet

and venetian blinds are a dust trap and a bad idea for a nusery IMO

I don't think you do - someone suggested we get one when I was pregnant with DS so it is dark when they have their naps, but we didn't bother (we have venetian blinds in his room). Problem is if they get used to only sleeping when it is completely dark they might not want to sleep anywhere else (e.g. if at other people's houses).

iwouldgoouttonight · 12/06/2008 11:21

DS sleeps anywhere now and doesn't wake up until 7am even if the sun is streaming in at 5am.

My black out blind made the difference between my day starting at 5 or 8

Libra1975 · 13/06/2008 10:31

We have bought the baa baa blackout blinds for OUR room so I can sleep as we have venetian blinds, never mind the baby! They will also be useful if we go to other peoples houses or my DH is doing night shifts.

robino · 13/06/2008 10:34

And unfortunately, my black out blind has made no difference to my day starting at 5.30! I think two lazy, sleeping in parents have created a monster early riser!

wasabipeanut · 13/06/2008 10:37

absolutely - DS and I suspect many munchkins have a habit of waking at first light. They don't understand civilised concepts like lie ins. Not great at this, or indeed any time of year.

Make sure you get one that fits really well as we have to resort to stuffing the gaps at the top and sides with sheets to make him room as dark as possible or he still wakes up at 5am.

DS2 is 8 weeks, he is still in bed now.
This is in a room that has the sun shining on it from about 4:30am.
However DS2 is 3 years old, and he needed a black out blind this year, was fine up until now though.
