Accidentally ate out of date Brie pregnant

Hi,

23 weeks pregnant.. foolishly ate a small wedge of Brie before realising it was 2 weeks out of date.. it was completely unopened and sealed in packaging (the date was written on the cheese board underneath rather than on the cheese which is why I didn’t see it) it was purchased from a supermarket. I’m so annoyed at myself. I smelt it after and it smelt slightly of ammonia which I know isn’t uncommon for Brie that isn’t out of date anyway. Helpful comments and experiences only please… looking to alleviate some anxiety

Likely be ok but its advised not to eat cheese with rind or blue cheeses during pregnancy unless they are cooked first, due to listeria risk.

It’ll most likely be absolutely fine, but any Brie isn’t advised in pregnancy so something to avoid going forward. I accidentally ate a load of blue cheese very early on because it was pasteurised and I thought that meant it was okay! So no judgement here, just passing on the information I didn’t know.

Oh gosh you’d have been fine if you’d eaten the entire thing! And do you know how many cases of listeria are reported a year? About 150 ish. And that’s in the entire UK. It is EXTREMELY rare

you have nothing to worry about at all. Back in the dark ages, when I had a baby , we used to eat brie, drink the odd glass of wine etc … it was fine. I KNOW things change and advice updates so of course follow current guidelines but you have absolutely nothing to concern yourself with here

Please don't worry yourself about this. As Lily said listeria is incredibly rare & id put strong money in mine if the cases being caused by Brie slightly out of date (2 weeks is nothing)

@LilyFeather thank you for your response.. it made me smile and gave me some relief.

I confused myself about which cheeses I’m allowed despite this being my 3rd pregnancy. it was when I saw the date that I freaked out and then google sent me into a tidal wave of panic 🫠

You can have any cheese, as long as you cook it through!

Otherwise, stick to pasteurised, non-blue cheeses. You can have soft cheeses like Philadelphia and fresh mozzarella too.

Just for future reference. I really wouldn't worry this time! :)

I didn't come across any Brie that wasn't pasturised during two pregnancies so I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that you shouldn't have eaten the Brie at all as PP have.
Now that it's eaten, I wouldn't worry about it at all, you are very unlikely to become ill.

Edited to add: I wasn't pregnant in the UK and other countries say brie is fine if pasturised

and most of those cases are tracked back to prepacked sandwiches and affect the elderly. Contrast approx 15 pedestrians are killed every week by cars
