Hello!

I am currently 20 weeks pregnant. I got married in 2021 and was very overweight (113kg). I worked with a trainer and moved past a lot of food issues and got down to 75kg around May time.

Following a boozy and delicious trip to Japan, I was 8kg up but also pregnant! The second I got pregnant I felt as if I was ballooning and I have avoided scales the whole way through.

Clothes look bad and I have nothing I can throw on. The only thing that looks any good is a tight dress with tights which is fairly uncomfortable.

I had my 20 weeks scan and the sonographer mentioned my higher BMI being a small factor in how long it took to do the checks. My midwife has been very supportive and told me not to worry but I really want to be able to dress and feel good for the pregnancy.

Anything below the bump has a little pooch hanging down. Anything over the bump with structure looks weird.

Does anyone have any advice or Instagram people I could follow for reassurance and style tips?

Well done on the amazing weight loss, that will have stood you in good stead and meant you went into pregnancy as healthily as possible! Try not to worry about the weight gain, a lot of women do just gain weight in pregnancy and there isn’t much they can do about it. Try and make healthy choices, plenty of fruits and vegetables and good, nutritious food, but otherwise don’t stress too much.

Personally I found dressing in the second trimester hard, because you have a bit of a bump and your body has changed, but it takes a while until you’re “big” enough for maternity clothes and it’s all a bit tricky until then. For me from about 26 weeks it all got easier. Until then I really recommend beyond nine, their stuff is expensive but really nice and easy to throw on in that awkward in betweeny phase. H&M also do nice maternity stuff which is definitely worth having a look at too. Around 20 weeks I mostly just sized up in non maternity clothes, but I think that was around the point I moved into maternity leggings and trousers, even if I was wearing “normal” tops and dresses. Leggings and a sweatshirt was a (slightly boring) uniform for a while!
