Nappy advice please - nippas vs applix?!

Afternoon,
DH & I have been thinking about nappies for ever (ah, the glamour of pregnancy). We've finally decided on washable bamboo nappies but are now stuck on fastening. Does anyone have any experience of using nippas or applix & which would you recommend?
If it puts it in context, neither of us have ever even changed a nappy

aplix is easier.

nippas are good but bloody sharp if they attach to you and not the nappy

SpecialOffer · 11/06/2008 17:37

applix, I have never been able to get to grips with nippa... plus my son is so wriggly now at 11mo, the quicker and easier the better imo.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 11/06/2008 17:40

Applix is fine for young babies - easier than nippas - now dd is 2 I try and use nappies with press studs as it takes her longer to get the nappy off then!.

ThingOne · 11/06/2008 17:41

Nippas all the way. Aplix gets horrid bits on it if you don't close it properly before washing.

pregnancy1 · 11/06/2008 17:42

Ah, good points. Plus applix seem to be easy to find on the website (have my £30 voucher from my local council). I don't know why, but I convinced myself that nippas would be more flexible..... I can always try them for stage 2 if I'm feeling adventurous!

Nippas are less bulky around the middle and also offer more adjustability. Also the aplix on mine has gone really manky and has bits of carrot etc stuck in from poo...

CarGirl · 11/06/2008 17:46

Nippas are far more flexible you can use bamibex or wambamboo/geobel (£50 for 10 delivered off ebay) size 2's from birth if they are nippa'd. Also you practice nippa's when they are little and don't move so it's easy as they get older. I found the velcro band made the nappies a bit rigid around their tummies.

pregnancy1 · 11/06/2008 17:47

more good points, but for nippas! Is it possible to pay someone (in cake) to make decisions for you?

I would recommend getting the £50 for 10 sizes 2's off ebay and then buying some 2nd hand size 1 nappies that are velcro and see which you prefer 2nd hand nappies are great because you get to find out what suits you and your bubba best cheaply.

Feel free to send me some cake, chocolate fudge please

claireybee · 11/06/2008 18:09

Yes if you take the booster out of the size 2 bambinex and fold them down they are still lovely and trim even on a newborn

CarGirl · 11/06/2008 18:14

claireybee back off it's my chocolate fudge cake

(the ones of ebay are a previous version of bambinex, I've had both and they are pretty much the same)

Jas · 11/06/2008 18:20

Aplix - my bamboo aplix are over 2 yrs old now, and it is almost completely useless. Comes undone very easily. I have to use nippas as well to keep them on.
I do like aplix though. Much easier for nappy novices, and nothing to lose.

Nippas - I'e been trying to use them for oer two years, still can't get them to work properly, and frequently lose them.

I would buy popper nappies if I was starting again

Do I get cake for confusing things even more??

NotABanana · 11/06/2008 18:31

Actually I have a cream popper nappy for sale if anyone wants it?

CarGirl · 11/06/2008 18:55

Jas which nappies are you trying to nippa? Some fabrics are more nippa'ble plus they are not as good after a few months use they lose their elasticity. Popper nappies on a nappy refusing 12 month old - eek no way!

lackaDAISYcal · 11/06/2008 19:02

either for a newborn, but definately nippas as they get older as they are more flexible around the middle.

I had the bambinex ones for DD, size 2s nippa'd and they were a really trim fit even folded down when she was only a couple of months old. and the colours are lovely.

Jas · 11/06/2008 20:08

I think most of the ones I'm trying to nippa are Wambamboo (not sure what they are called now.)
I have an organic cotton one which works well with a nippa.

I find the middle bit comes undone, then it pulls up and digs into his tummy.

lackaDAISYcal · 11/06/2008 20:57

wambamboo are now bambinex. I think the pile on the bamboo can flatten over time, especially if it gets too hot. I'm sure there is a way of fluffing it up though, but can't remember.

mymblemummy · 12/06/2008 00:05

I don't like Aplix. It works effectively but you are supposed to close up the velcro tabs before washing them (or they snag on the rest of the washing).

And when I have a poo covered nappy I want to put it straight in the bucket, not muck about trying to close the tabs.

I prefer Nippas and Poppers, probably Nippas overall, because they allow you to adjust the nappy to your baby's size, and also because I have had nappies lose their poppers over time.

But I didn't think Nippas worked on bamboo nappies. Do they? If so, who makes them?

PortAndLemon · 12/06/2008 00:10

Nippas are more adjustable. Aplix gets covered in fluff and snags and doesn't last as well. I definitely prefer nippas or poppers to Aplix.

If you pay me in cake I will be happy to state that even more emphatically .

pregnancy1 · 12/06/2008 08:14

Oooh - chocolate fudge cake all round. Many thanks for all this.
I couldn't find nippas for Bambinex (bamboo) nappies originally, but have found a website that will order them for me.
Now just to think about being brave and going for size 2 straight away

Share nicely Cargirl!

Flame has nippa bambinex

claireybee · 12/06/2008 12:20

I found if you take out the booster and fold the front inwards rather than out it makes the nappy really trim on a newborn. Otherwise you can nippa it to fit and then fold down the front

PInkyminkyohnooo · 12/06/2008 21:20

Nippas definitely here, and especially good for newborns as you can adjust the fit for skinny legs, avoiding the chord etc. much more easily, and it's so quick. I hook one side on then put two fingers under the nippa whilst fastening, that way you get a prefect fit and no baby undoing the aplix whilst you get the wrap on!

thehairybabysmum · 12/06/2008 22:18

I have nippa, applix and poppers and prefer the popper ones personally.

Washersaurus · 12/06/2008 22:25

I prefer nippas too, I find applix goes all manky in the wash; even if you close it properly to avoid the fluff, it eventually starts looking really worn and nasty. Nippas are much more adjustable too.

I have an assortment of applix, nippas and poppers in my extensive nappy collection. I usually put a popper nappy in the change bag just in case I find myself without a nippa (which I never have yet )
