Echogenic bowel at 20 week scan

Hi all

Wondering if anyone has dealt with this recently as I am absolutely besides myself. I am 22 weeks pregnant. I had a scan at 19 weeks 5 days, everything came back fine. But they booked me in for a second scan 21 weeks 5 days to see the brain a bit closer.

At the scan she said brain was fine to we breathed a sign of relief. However, at the end she asked if I had had any bleeds which I thought was weird. I had had a tiny haematoma about week 8 but nothing bad. Turns out my baby has an echogenic bowel.

Next thing I know I am having a blood test for Cystic Fibrosis and TORCH to check for infection.

I was so terrified of the news and having not been given much info, I went for a private scan the next day where the doctor explained there were floating particles baby could have swallowed (despite the fact I said the haematoma was nothing and v early on.)

There's basically nothing we can do but sit and wait for the test results to come back. This was an IVF baby and after a horrible long year of treatment I was finally looking forward to Xmas. But it wasn't meant to be.

Would love to talk to anyone else in this situation xx

Hi @fifitrixibell1989 I had my scan/appt yesterday and the fluid/placenta issues have cleared up but the echogenic bowel has not changed.

She didn’t have my blood results but when I spoke to my GP he could see most of the viruses have come back negative which is amazing. I was so worried about CMV tbh, not so much CF. I made myself have a panic attack reading the CMV awareness website.

Still waiting on a couple of virus (I think one was rubella) & CF results but I feel much more confident that I’ll be part of the 90%+ where this clears up or is normal. I have another scan on Friday 13th and I think if all bloods come back negative it’ll just be regular scans until I give birth then maybe some checks when they are born.

Good luck for your scan Monday - I’ve read it can just disappear in pregnancy so fingers crossed some progress.

Ahhh I am so pleased for you! Yes I don't think the echogenic bowel disappears that fast (if it is going to disappear). I just hope if it's still there for both of us, it's not something serious.

That's interesting your GP knew before you. It was similar for me - I just happened to call up and they had the virus results. I'm not sure why they didn't update the NHS platform as soon as they had them, but still I was relieved they were negative.

Fantastic news about your fluid/placenta - I hope you can start enjoying this pregnancy again!

How long have you been waiting for CF results now? I think 2-3 weeks is the normal waiting time.
