How do I get an early scan?

Dh and I were just about to start fertility treatment and I have found out I am pregnant- about 6 weeks. It has come as a (lovely) surprise but we are both still slightly in shock as we thought our chances were nil.

Saw GP today for initial appointment. She said there is no point having an early scan as they can be futile and inconclusive and we should wait until 12 weeks.

DH and I both feel very strongly that we would like an early scan just to check for viability, we are happy to pay but I just don't know how to go about it. Who do we contact?

Would appreciate some advice.

what a nice surprise you must have had with the bfp! we had exactly the same - it happened the first time after id booked in for all the tests..

re private scans, i did need a referral from a midwife, but not claiming to be an expert. I had one at 5.5 weeks, which was good to see that it was not ectopic. we had another (free! as first one did not prove viability) at 7.5 weeks and saw the heartbeat. it was amazing, and so reassuring.

re cost, i am central london and it was £150. worth checking if they will repeat for free if you go to early and it is inconclusive re heartbeat perhaps?

much luck. im 9.5 weeks now and still not really relaxing!

Someone paid £200 for a scan???? Outrageous! We did IVF abroad and a (private) scan cost £5. We had our first scan at 4 weeks to determine whether it was a multiple pregnancy. It was very reassuring to then have a scan every month after that until we could detect the heartbeat ourselves. The consultant explained that women who undergo IVF are usually quite anxious once they fall pregnant, and so he was very sympathetic to anyone wanting a scan. And no, he said in all his years of carrying out so many scans, he had never had any reason to detect any problems arising from frequent or early scanning, before anyone says anything....

Well have phoned and enquired and they were very helpful and didn't treat me like I was mad for wanting an early scan! Secretary is speaking to the consultant and ringing me back.

Consultant rang and it is going to cost £200! And he can't see me for over 2 weeks by which point I'll only be a few weeks away from 12 weeks scan.

Reconsidering now.

well, my private 20 week dating scan cost £189 at my local bmi hospital.

but, the appointments were available immeadiately and they could accomodate evening or weekend appt too.... so i don't really understand the waiting time... did he explain why?

wheredowegonext · 12/06/2008 14:47

He is an NHS Consultant but runs private clinics on a Saturday and they are full until the 28th June. I think he is my only option locally, we would have to travel quite far for anything else.

do you have private healthcare?

they won't cover you for this, but wil be able to sort out where you can get an appointment quickly...

I am another longtime ttcer expecting my first The chance of miscarriage actually drops dramatically around 8 weeks to 2% if the baby looks healthy on a scan done around then. So I've booked my private scan for when I am 8 weeks gone. It will cost us £75

I am very nervous about it!

wheredowegonext · 12/06/2008 15:56

Congrats upwind- exciting isn't it!

I couldn't believe it when they said £200- apparently we have to pay £130 for the consultation and scan, £40 for the use of hospital equipment and £40 for the consultant fees. She said he might waiver the £40 fees but that's still £160!

I still can't believe it either, despite the constant nausea and tiredness.

£200 sounds close to what my fertility consultant was charging for a consultation which included a private scan.

I just googled for "private scan" and my area and those around. I found a private clinic that does viability scans for £75. However, nuchal scans there cost £190. I hope you can find somewhere that will do it for a more reasonable price.

We have an appointment with our fertility clinic next Thursday which our GP recommended we still attend so I think I will ask them when I go.
