oh god i am now also wanting mine back - wonder if they still have it frozen somewhere after 19 months

Salamander · 10/06/2008 20:04

unfortunately nappyzone all that stuff gets incinerated as clinical waste

forevercleaning · 10/06/2008 20:05

OMG i cannot believe all this recipe stuff!!

Broccoli - PMSL butchers window

Nappyzoneneedsanewname · 10/06/2008 20:06

Im a bit peeved now that my midwife never ever mentioned the possibility of keeping it!

expatinscotland · 10/06/2008 20:06

i think i'll stick to the sertraline for my PND.

lulumama · 10/06/2008 20:07

my dad had a disc removed from his back and brought it home in a little tube of something, formaldehyde? he kept it on a shelf in teh lounge, for ages, then asked me to look after it for him as it was creeping mum out, but the cleaner threw it out, he was distraught

MrsTittleMouse · 10/06/2008 20:09

I was desperate to see mine, but I ended up in the CLU and all my attention was on the paed team crowded around DD. When I knew that she was OK the moment had passed and I had missed my chance.

ScottishMummy · 10/06/2008 20:09

some folk keep their kidney stones, as ehm object d'art on the mantlepiece

expatinscotland · 10/06/2008 20:11

i had zero desire to see mine.

i had mega epidural with dd1 because of forceps delivery so didn't feel it. with dd2, i had the jab to make it come out as i had bad anaemia, and although it hurt, i was just happy NOT to have to push anymore.

CoteDAzur · 10/06/2008 20:11

You people are unbelievable

If you eat your own placenta, I guess your partners/husbands will not hear 'no' for an answer when it comes to swallowing

expatinscotland · 10/06/2008 20:12

it's tres gross, isn't it, cote?

Countingthegreyhairs · 10/06/2008 20:14

Interesting that most animals eat them though isn't it? That would suggest there is some merit in the idea. Yuck though.

lulumama · 10/06/2008 20:16

oooh, cote, here is a lovely alternative thread for you to be all judgey and scientific about!

robinpud · 10/06/2008 20:17

I did keep a finger nail once in a mtchbox after an unfortunate hockey accident, but I was only 10.

But, back to placentas.. we had this for tea the night I came home from hosiptal.

BroccoliSpears · 10/06/2008 20:17

The first time I went to dp's granny's house I picked up an interesting objet d'art from a side table and wondered what on earth it was.

It was granny's old hip replacement that had snapped and had to be taken out.

ScottishMummy · 10/06/2008 20:18

Human placentophagy Nope! i like to think evolutionary biology separates us from the the placenta chompers

CoteDAzur · 10/06/2008 20:42

lulu - This is one subject for which I don't care to be scientific about.

Even if proven to hold the key to eternal life, I am not eating my (or anybody else's) placenta

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 10/06/2008 20:50

Is the theory regarding PND something to do with stabilising the hormones?

My mw told me that she has seen a woman deliver her placenta, pick it up and take a bite!

After the birth of ds the mw gave us an anatomy lecture about the placenta. It was fascinating to look at.

I plan to keep the placenta after this birth and bury it in the garden. I see it as something really special, but I couldn't eat it.

I'm also thinking of doing some placenta prints with it here

CoteDAzur · 10/06/2008 20:53

I don't know why I'm surprised, though.

It was first on MN that I realized that there were actual people who:

  • don't use soap or other cleaning products on their DCs (not just newborns, but toddlers)
  • don't use shampoo (on their own hair)
  • don't use deodorant (intentionally, not because they can't afford it)

Not to mention the guy who was sexually aroused by kitchen utensils.

I love MN

lulumama · 10/06/2008 20:57

fair dos cote

i think i missed the kitchen utensil thread though!

star6 · 10/06/2008 21:03

really cotedazur?? shocking... what does hair look like if you don't shampoo it, I wonder? just curious.
This placenta stuff sounds gross. This is my first but I don't even want to see mine in a few months time... yuck.
And Cotedazure - you're right... my answer to swallowing is also... 'absolutely not'. gross. I think I would vomit.

CoteDAzur · 10/06/2008 21:05

Ah the kitchen utensils thread was a classic!

lulumama · 10/06/2008 21:06

i shall read it after i have finished looking up placenta recipes

forevercleaning · 10/06/2008 21:06

why is there such a fascination with keeping the placenta though?
Yes, it helped nourish the developing baby, but even wanting to look at it for more than a moment, let alone 'taking a bite' strikes me as really gross.
I may have to hide this thread as I am about to have my evening meal and i keep having thoughts of this chewy membrane full of blood and bits. Good job im not having liver or anything like that!

CoteDAzur · 10/06/2008 21:07

Apparently, if you don't wash your hair for a couple of weeks, it stops itching and otherwise bothering you. And you start to smell kind of like sheep

To each their own and all that, but... WHY?
