Elective C Section on Christmas Eve

Hello 👋 first time poster here - just wanted opinions/advice on my current situation.. sorry it’s a bit of a long one!

I’m a FTM, 37+1, and baby has been frank breech for the past few weeks, including at my last growth scan yesterday, despite all efforts to turn them (except ECV, midwife basically advised against it as I have an anterior placenta and low PAPP-A so risks outweigh likelihood of it working). Baby is also on the 97th percentile but I passed the GD test at 28 weeks and nobody’s ever mentioned retesting.

Ive been low risk the whole pregnancy but was sent to maternity assessment after scan where I saw a consultant for the first time for all of 2 mins to discuss options. I say discuss, I was literally handed a leaflet by the receptionist titled ‘Your options for breech baby at 37 weeks’ then consultant came into the waiting room and asked what one I wanted to go with (she was in a rush as en route to perform someone else’s section). Luckily I’ve had lots of discussions with my midwife about my options or I’d have felt totally rushed, uninformed and uncomfortable at having to make a huge decision like this in a public waiting room.

I opted for an elective section and have been told all along by midwife this would be booked for some point in my 39th week following a breech 37 week growth scan (39 weeks is Boxing Day on wards).

I then had a call from the consultant saying there’s no space in my 39th week so she’s booked me in for Christmas Eve. She said theyd rather not do it then as it’s before 39 weeks but because of the time of year it’s currently my only option if I want an elective. This has sent me spiralling as means it’s now before 39 weeks for no medical reason and the consultant herself said this isn’t what they’d prefer. I know it’s only a matter of days but it feels like my babies health is being put at higher risk purely because of bank holidays restricting availability.

As a ftm it’s taken me a while to come to terms with having a c section over natural labour anyway but given babies size and position I felt it’s the safest option. I still think it is but feel I’ve lost any control over my birth as it seems my choice is to take the earlier date or just dice with the chance of going into labour and needing an unplanned section instead or risking an emergency which is my worst case scenario.

I’m also obviously a bit sad at the prospect of being in hospital on Christmas Day for no medical reason. Healthy arrival of baby is of course the priority but I’ve experienced hospital around then before and it wasn’t a great experience with less staff on etc.

This is essentially just a bit of a vent but what would you do in this situation and is it likely there will be cancellations or something in my 39th week? Any reassurance is appreciated 😔

@LilacPandas I'm surprised that your consultant has a preference for 29+ weeks, because back in the olden days when I had my elective (32 now), the consultant was reluctant to allow me to go to 38 weeks. I was ill with a throat infection and wanted to be shot of it before baby arrived. He eventually agreed after making me promise to come in if I had the slightest twinge - so after starting contractions on C-section day, baby was born at exactly 38 weeks weighing 9lb 1oz.

ThisLimeTurtle · 14/12/2025 19:14

I am a FTM and was exactly the same, breech baby and offered an electrive c section but it was at 38 weeks. I was so nervous but it was such a good experience due to being planned and not an emergency and my little boy was absolutely fine.

HK04 · 14/12/2025 19:14

Feel for you OP. FTM tough. Be kind to yourself and try not to stress. Unfortunately for many Mums as has been said, don’t get the birth they’d of chosen. Getting wee one here and you safely looked after the main thing. Christmas Eve arrival really quite special. Remember too Christmas not just the 25th. It’s the whole season so keep that tree up, have a Christmas 2 when you are home and hopefully you’ll be able to put your feet up. Elective much better than many scenarios so just wishing you and your wee one all the best.

Sugargliderwombat · 14/12/2025 19:14

OP I had a breech baby in march. Came the day before 39 weeks. Elective a day early is better than emergency.

I hope it all goes well, I'll never forget seeing his little breech legs after he was born!

Jk987 · 14/12/2025 19:20

Take the Christmas Eve option. It’s pure piece of mind and it will be amazing. It’s only 2 days before the 39 weeks.

CrouchHigh · 14/12/2025 19:23

I had a c-section for a breech baby at 36 weeks, so understand your anxiety. It was technically an emergency c-section, however I was booked in the night before with the electives and wasn’t in labour yet (my waters broke early). My baby was healthy and the delivery was the calmest part of the whole hospital experience. A few pp have pointed out the steroid injection- I was offered them but turned it down after weighing up short term vs long term pros and cons. I had frequent scans throughout so was comfortable my baby was a good size and weight. The Obs consultant tried to persuade me otherwise by sending in a Dr from Neo-natal paeds to talk to me, but he fully agreed with my rationale and told me that obs always seem to push it even if it’s not always necessary. I have no regrets. Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself and if you’re unsure ask to speak to someone as they need your full consent before any procedure.

ScaryM0nster · 14/12/2025 19:24

Best practise also says to schedule electives when there are sufficient senior staff available.

38+5 is the same as 39+0 within the accuracy of any measuring system used to set EDD. Ao the medical risk to the baby from Christmas Eve vs Boxing Day is not material.

If you’ve got unanswered questions about the c section and preparation for it then get it touch with your midwife or the maternity unit and ask to talk to someone. That’s the bit thats important.

(and yes, birthdays very close to December aren’t always the best, but the boat sailed on that subject 8.5 months ago - anything that wasn’t significantly premature was going to come into that bracket).

WimbyAce · 14/12/2025 19:39

I also had Elective CS for my 1st for breech. She was due on the 15th and I was given a choice of the 8th or 9th. She was actually tiny 6lb 1oz but was fine. You just have to go with the date they have given you as there is limited availability and they obviously want to avoid you going into labour with breech as that would then be an Emergency CS situation. For the record my 2nd did arrive early naturally at 38ish weeks.

You’ll be fine!! I had an elective section at 39 weeks, also had low PAPP-A, baby was absolutely fine. Also planned section always go better than emergency, so you could wait and go into labour and then it’ll be an emergency, I understand it sucks with the bh but it’ll be fine!!

Crushed23 · 14/12/2025 19:47

Go with it. The consultant would not offer to perform a surgery she didn’t think was safe.

Whattodo541289 · 14/12/2025 19:50

37 weeks onwards is considered full term. I have my elective section at 37 weeks albiet I had placenta previa so it was medically necessary. If your unhappy with the consultant or the hospital cant you speak to your midwife and change either or both? I also did this.

Chazzasaurus · 14/12/2025 19:57

I know this situation is different from yours, but I ended up having an emergency section at 35 weeks. Baby was perfectly healthy, didn't need any help after birth whatsoever and despite starting life very small (4lb 6oz) is absolutely thriving. This was all out of my control and was scary as a FTM. All plans went out of the window, but we roll with it! This will be the most magical Christmas for you.

Ohmygodnotnow · 14/12/2025 19:59

I had a planned section on Christmas Eve at 38 weeks-they insisted on using their dates rather than mine, her actually due date sound have been Jan 2. It was rather magical but just a slight warning that they tend to be a little short staffed. If there's anything particular you want as your post-birth meal like sushi, get it organized the day before (I had hospital veggie lasagne as my Christmas meal 🤮)

Please don't fear it-I had such a calm, joyful birth and dd still got the best of care. DD is about to turn 5 and we get round it by having a whopping party at the beginning of December for all her friends, then something small with family on the day itself. Congratulations and all the very best for your birth xx

Usernamenotav · 14/12/2025 20:11

I'd wait it out. I know a couple of people born on Xmas eve and they HATE it. I could have had elective section at 39 weeks which would have been 2nd Jan. I waited until 18th January

Madrid21 · 14/12/2025 20:11

I've had two sections first emergency and second planned. First baby although not xmas eve was early hours of 1st Jan. He is incredibly proud to be the first baby of the year (it got him in the papers) He likes to tell everyone he was a famous baby 🤣. It is a bit of an inconvenience now he's older trying to find things open to do but we just have his party a couple of weeks later. Planned was so much calmer and altogether a wonderful experience, would definitely go for that

ButWhyMama · 14/12/2025 20:28

DC2 was an ELCS at 38+5. This was due to a combination of consultant availability and them wanting me out by the weekend. It was absolutely fine, just one of those things.

I would say try and look at it that you get to take your baby home on Christmas day and enjoy the rest of the holiday together.

abracadabra1980 · 14/12/2025 21:02

37 wks for me - all fine. I couldn't care less about being in hospital on Christmas Day in your shoes - just roll with it, you'll be fine. And the very best of luck OP X

ConfusedxApple · 14/12/2025 21:14

I haven't read the whole thread but my DS was born by planned c section at 38+5 and it all went v smoothly and he was a chunky bonnie baby. I was home the next day.

In fact I had two electives and was out of hospital the next day with both. So hopefully you will get to come home with your baby on Christmas day which would just be the best present.

Good luck!

IunderstandMissHannigan · 14/12/2025 21:25

Wouldn’t they have minimal staff working on Boxing Day also?
As others have said, a couple of days shouldn’t make a difference. Just wondering if you’re also experiencing extra anxiety because you don’t really know the consultants.
I hope all goes well whatever you decide on xx

p.s. some tips I wish I had known about prior to my sections - … pack your own painkillers and take them yourself (obviously the correct amount according to the packet). I had to wait AGES for pain relief and felt I was a nuisance by having to ask again and again.
secondly… and this one should be written in the leaflets they give out about recovery - take a litter picker into hospital with you! They help so much when needing to pull your pants up, pick up anything in the shower etc. I got some funny looks from other patients as I shuffled along to the showers with my litter picker and towel but the nurses understood and said it was a great idea 😂

Teapot1980 · 14/12/2025 21:34

mrssunshinexxx · 13/12/2025 20:31

If the only reason for elective is due to centile I’d book an elective for week 40 or 41 and see if you go into labour naturally ( majority of FTM’s don’t without intervention )
growth scans are notorious for being wrong, I’ve had 3 sections 2 emergency and 1 elective I tried so so hard to have a vaginal birth c section isn’t easy. As for it being Xmas Eve I’d ask for a 9am slot if you go down this route and you will be able to leave early Xmas morning

The main reason she is having a CS is because the baby is breech

Ek1234 · 14/12/2025 21:40

My first DD was born by elective C-section at 38+5 days, I was given the option of C-section or induction at 39 weeks and choose C-section. She was born at 11am and I was home after lunch the next day. All very straight forward. Hopefully you're experience will be as smooth and you can get home on Christmas Day with your little Christmas bundle

Soundofthesea · 14/12/2025 21:43

My son was born via elective section at 36+4.
I had a private obstetrician who only did c sections on Mondays and Fridays and with 37week falling on New Years day and me not wanting to go past 37 weeks (due to previous complications) we did it early and all was fine.
My son was a good weight but did need to be admitted with jaundice for a few days.
You will be fine

ColdLittleHeart · 14/12/2025 21:44

Don’t be too hard on yourself OP. There’s so much to think about as a FTM but you’re in the best hands with a planned C section and the consultant wouldn’t have suggested it if it wasn’t safe. Also don’t worry about staffing levels, I had a Christmas Eve birth and the level of care was actually much better than with my 1st.

There’s something extra special about a Christmas Eve baby, it’s makes this time of year even more magical

Tammygirl12 · 14/12/2025 21:46

Have had 2 emc and 1 elective (much nicer!) all born at 38 weeks.

I would take what they offer you :) good luck

Mummytobe1994 · 14/12/2025 21:53

I had an induction at 35 weeks and baby was absolutely fine, no NICU needed. I’d be tempted to even get baby out slightly earlier to avoid a Christmas Eve birthday (23rd?) but 37 weeks is classed as full term and babies are just putting on weight at that point but since you’re measuring big that’s not a concern so I’d go for anything after 38 weeks
