Are shivering movements (baby's) normal at 32 weeks?

Hi. I'm 32 weeks, getting the usual kicking and rolling. But in the last few weeks I've also had a sensation like the baby is shivering or shuddering or jiggling a hand or foot briefly, very small very rapid movements. Anyone else had this? Is it normal? Have started to worry that it's having a tiny fit or something. It doesn't happen all the time, maybe once a day or once every two days.

Hiccups?

PhilB · 09/06/2008 22:52

Doesn't seem like hiccups, it just happens once and then stops. More like if you get a twitchy muscle spasm, like your eye twitching or something. Hiccups would be a jiggle and then wait and then a jiggle and then wait etc., wouldn't it?

That's a relief, thank you. Time to go to bed so the baby can start its all-night internal prodding about!

Hi Phil,

I had this with DD and was terrified that she was having fits too. However she is now a very healthy two year old. I've no idea what the shivers are though.

Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

There was a thread about this I bit ago that I posted on. My DD did this, and it's not hiiccups, it's a real shudder. She did it a few times after she was born,at 39 weeks. Nothing wrong with her, and no-one could shed any light on it. But I wouldn't worry, unless there are other health factors with the pg. DD is now 19 monthhs and has had no health/developmental problems

Hoorah - baby did this for first time yesterday. Same sort of movement as when 'someone walks over your grave.' Thought it was cute. Glad other people have had it.

oh my god, ive had this for the last few weeks and feared the same thing.
its a weird feeling. guess its quite normal though!xx

mummy2bsoon · 11/06/2008 20:13

i have this, i tink it snormal...hope so too...

aiti72 · 11/06/2008 21:47

I had this when pregnant with my daughter and the senior midwife said it's felt when the baby pees!!!

mawbroon · 11/06/2008 22:01

I was just going to say that about the baby peeing. They shiver when they pee when they are out of the womb, so no reason why they wouldn't do it whilst in the womb.

mawbroon · 11/06/2008 22:04

In fact, look, it's not just babies who shiver when they pee!

LynetteScavo · 11/06/2008 22:05

DS2 did this!

He then did it once or twice after he was born. The midwife saw, and was quite concerned, but I wasn't He's a fine 5 yo now!

PInkyminkyohnooo · 12/06/2008 19:31

When DD did it after she was born, she wasn't peeing, so I'm not sure what it was, but she was fine,as I say.

cheerfulvicky · 12/06/2008 21:37

I've had this a few times now and I'm almost 31 weeks. I'd wondered idly what it might be, it feels strange and made me feel a bit sick!
Interesting it might be baby peeing, hehe...

kookiegoddess · 18/06/2008 20:04

I read somewhere that the shivering once baby is born is signs of the nervous system still developing. My friend's baby did it when he'd just woken up and was being changed (no, he wasn't cold). Not sure if that has anything to do with shivering in the womb tho.

Hello all - just wanted to reassure you that I had this sensation - bit like a vibration inside - very bizzarre. DS is now a healthy 9 month old. I found a thread just like this one at the time, so I think it is relatively common, although my MW thought I was mad when I mentioned it to her at the time!

Only thing I noticed with DS after he was born was that he did the most amazing lip tremble at times, which might have explained the sensation in my tummy!!

Good luck to you all with your pregnancies.

Wow - I've felt weird vibrations occasionally (am 27 weeks) but it hadn't occurred to me to worry until now! Glad to hear it's normal though
