Ate something that tasted bad

Hi there,

I am only 6 weeks pregnant. I just cooked a sausage that had been frozen in date, then thawed today. It was for my toddler, so I tested a bit to check the temp was ok.

It tasted a bit sour, like it had gone off. It had been frozen for a couple of months. I threw it out and didn’t serve it to my tot, but just worry how worried I should be about food poisoning.

Will maternity triage even talk to me if I haven’t had a booking appointment?

thanks!

You’ll be fine however talk to your midwife about anxiety as that’s more likely to cause miscarriages or stillbirth than a bit of sausage.

You didn’t eat the whole thing, you just had a taste. With sausages it’s actually when they’re raw that food poisoning is more likely to occur. If you feel fine you will be fine. But probably worth talking to your midwife at your next appointment about support with this kind of overthinking. If you have health anxiety you can definitely get help with it.

Taste changes are common in early pregnancy. If you don’t get ill from this, will you stop worrying?

Bitzee · 04/12/2025 18:02

It would be worth asking, maybe via the GP if you haven’t had tours booking appt yet, for some anxiety/mental health support because you are somewhat overreacting. Not sure maternity triage could do anything though?
I’d always err on the side of caution and chuck if you’re unsure but it’s also possible that it was fine and pregnancy hormones made it taste funny. I went off loads of stuff whilst pregnant, think it’s pretty common.

itsmeits · 04/12/2025 18:08

You will be fine.
Your taste may have changed due to your hormones.

Wow I didn’t expect people to jump on and query my mental health here.

I do have anxiety (which the GP is useless about) and other health issues that mean this is a high risk pregnancy.

my concerns arise more from the risks associated with foods in pregnancy and the bugs that might be in there.

OP I remember being like this when I was pregnant. I am absolutely sure you will be fine. PP are quite right, your tastebuds change when you are pregnant. Frozen is usually safer than fresh.

There is no need to phone maternity triage at this stage of pregnancy @Mustardyellows

Even if you did get food poisoning there's nothing they can do.

If you do develop symptoms of food poisoning, rest and drink plenty of water.

I do think it's unlikely that you will, though.

What a horrible thing to say.

cannynotsay · 04/12/2025 21:14

when you’re pregnant you can taste things like that tbh when food off etc

ForLoveNotMoney · 04/12/2025 21:55

I am a midwife OP. You will be fine. Your taste changes and things can taste horrible. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad. Even if it was, it shouldn’t affect your pregnancy. Many women suffer awful pregnancy vomiting and deliver healthy babies. At 6 weeks, your pregnancy is being looked after by the egg sack and corpus luteum and is very safe. Any miscarriage at this stage would be very likely due to an anomaly in the fetus and not anything you have eaten or done.

try and relax (which I know is so hard)
