C section for large baby

beth202 · 03/12/2025 16:57

I'm due a section for the reason of a large baby. IV had a meeting with a consultant who didn't reassure me at all. I'm worried about it been rescheduled loads due to emergencies and other reasons. Anyone else had a section due to large baby and what priority were you?
I have other kids to get childcare for this is the main reason for the anxiety of it all.
Thank you

I had a section for twins
Had two days notice

No cancellation

If the only indication for C section is a suspected large baby (which isn't generally a recommended indication for a C section on its own?) I imagine you would be either Category 3 or 4, so there is always the possibility of being bumped down the list because of women in higher categories needing a C section. I don't think it would be possible to receive a guarantee that your section will 100% go ahead at the expected day or time.

I was recommended because of the chance of him getting stuck is high and my last baby got stuck so was quite traumatic. I was just wondering other peoples experiences

I did! I arrived at 7:30am and we were first to theatre, he was born at 9:44am x

I had 2 x elcs just because i wanted them as i felt it would give the best outcome for me and baby.

I wemt in a 6am i think(?) To do pre op assessment, baby born before 10am (9-10am) and was on the mat ward before lunch both times.

Both births were calm and "enjoyable" - it was a very positive experience overall.
Recovery was fine... second time possibly slightly easier

Are you asking about your priority level should you actually go into labour or your priority level on the scheduled day of your elective section?

On the day of my scheduled section sorry should have said

You'd be on the elective list in my Trust. We have a team who take care of that list and everyone is typically done by 4pm on a day with a full list. If we have an awful day with staff shortages and emergencies, then the elective staff may be busy with those and things get delayed.

I’ve had c-section for large baby twice. First time I was low priority and he was born something like 6.35pm, second time around I was middle of the day. Two great big fat 10+lb boys though 😁

BuddhaAtSea · 03/12/2025 20:28

It’s like asking: can they control the weather. Generally there’s two teams, one for electives, one for emergencies. But if someone’s in trouble, you will be bumped. The team would be looking forward to a nice calm controlled c section like yours. You’d be bumped for a good reason.
You can say in the morning something like: I appreciate you can’t help who becomes a priority in the day, but my partner needs to get the other kids from school, I’d rather have him with me if I can. And leave it at that, they get it and I promise you they’ll do their best.

I had an elective but went in first and the breech got bumped as the NICU was full. Poor lady had to be admitted so she could be whipped into surgery whenever a space became available.

Ive had two sections due to large babies (as well as being in my 40s with type 1 diabetes). My first baby decided to come early anyway and just just of 37 weeks. He was 10lbs 4oz!! Second one she arrived as scheduled (9lbs 14 oz). The first they said even though my waters had broken I wasn’t in active labour (and obviously ahead of schedule) so they would get me to the operating room as soon as they could fit me in, which was about ten hours later. My second was only delayed about an hour.
