too little weight gain??!!

Ok getting really quite worried now.

At my booking in appt I was weighed in and measured and had a bang on average BMI for my height and weight. I don't have scales at home but every now and again I weigh myself on the post room scales at work which are very accurate as they are calibrated every month. I am 30 weeks and have only put on 10 lbs and my bump is described by everyone as being 'neat', intially a compliment but now making me feel very paranoid. I have had no MS whatsoever and am eating a normal, healthy diet and walk about 5km a day - my daily commute which I really enjoy and keeps me mobile after a day in front of the computer.

If I am to meet the 'minimum' standard healthy weight gain talked about in various books and on websites, 20 lbs, then I need to gain 10 lbs in ten weeks - is that possible!!!???

I am going to raise the issue at my midwife check up tomorrow but am really really worried that she might dismiss my concerns, especially as I measured up fine at the last appt and heatbeat was fine on the doppler. So am I right to be worried? Does anyone else have any experience of this??????? Any info or advice would be very gratefully received!!!

I wouldn't worry. I LOST weight when I was pregnant and have a very healthy baby girl

Libra1975 · 09/06/2008 17:00

You are 30 weeks and walking 5Km a day? I am in awe....

Talk to the mw but as long as you are measuring up fine and the heartbeat is strong then I doubt there is anything to worry about. Some midwifes don't even bother weighing pregnant mums (I am 34 weeks and apart from an initial question of how much do I weigh at booking in they haven't put me near a scale)

Pregnant women just like to worry

charliesmum22 · 09/06/2008 17:00

Same here - lost half a stone, and had a beautiful and healthy little boy. Good luck tomorrow, let us know what your m/w says...

PrettyCandles · 09/06/2008 17:05

You're worried because you're not suffering morning sickness, and won't have too much trouble getting back into your jeans after the pg.

The average woman might gain 20lbs in pregnancy. But you are not the average woman, you are uniquely you.

Weight gain is just one measure of health. Although I was weighed at my bookings-in, I don't recall ever being weighed at any point after that in any of my pgs. Yet I was mahoosive, the proverbial beached whale! No-one was concerned, and my babies were all healthy. (I struggle to lose the weight aferwards.)

FWIW, my cousin put on virtually no weight - even with twins! - had no ms, and twice left the hospital two days after giving birth wearing her pre-maternity jeans. After having her twins she complained that it took all of two weeks to get bac into her jeans. And she finds breastfeeding a doddle. I still love her, though.

Fufulina · 09/06/2008 17:05

Oh what I would do to not be the size of a house at 15 weeks!

mamamufin · 09/06/2008 17:08

Halffrench try not to worry. I am 26 weeks and have only put on 4lb. My bump is coming slowly, but some people are still shocked when I tell them I am pregnant. I have a BMI of 25 too . I have however suffered from the worst ms imaginable for the first 20 weeks or so. I would just mention it to your midwife though x

MissingMyHeels · 09/06/2008 17:09

I wouldn't worry at all, it's only a guideline. I had only put on 9lbs by 30 weeks but over the next 12 I put on over a stone so you may have a late burst.

HalfFrench · 09/06/2008 17:14

I know, I know - this wasn't meant to be a 'my diamond shoes are too tight' moan honestly!! It's just that this is my 1st pregnancy so don't know what to expect in terms of body changes etc. If it's any comfort I am starting to get, ahem, the first signs of piles. Lovely.

Thanks for the reassurance though and will let you know what happens with the MW.

It is perfectly normal to gain 1lb per week in the last trimester, so yes, you can gain 10lbs in 10 weeks.

I'm 24 weeks and have put on 5lbs, I also have a neat bump but have asked my dr about similar concerns to yours and she assured me everything is fine and that we're all so different. As long as you're healthy and eating enough, I wouldn't worry.

Have a word with the pro's if you're worried, that's what I did.

I put on 4kg when pregnant - after I had DS, I was lighter than before I was pregnant. Don't worry!

hardygirl · 09/06/2008 19:23

I'm 30 weeks too and I've put on 10 lb! Snap. My bump looks very neat first thing in the morning and is quite a lot bigger by the evening. The rest of me is looking slimmer and I've had a few comments that my face and arms are thinner. I wouldn't worry about it - we're all different, as evidenced by the posts above. Good luck!

lackaDAISYcal · 09/06/2008 19:32

I'm 18.5 weeks and so far have lost 13lbs. I'm eating much healthier than I have done in any of my previous pregnancies, exercising more and not drinking the copius amounts of wine I was before I got pregnant. I have a very visible bump though so am trying not to worry, even though a wee niggle in the back of my mind tells me I should be "piling on the pounds" by now. I'm trying to look at the positive side, which is that I must have lost more weight on aggregate as the baby and all the support system must weigh a fair amount by this time. I am also aware that I had it to lose though.

But.....if your bump is measuring OK at your AN appointments and your 20 week scan was fine, then I would try not to worry about it. Your MW should listen to your concerns and reassure you rather than dismiss you though.

Good Luck.

elkiedee · 09/06/2008 23:16

Babies are efficient creatures when it comes to hoovering up the nutrition going. I put on 4 lbs between 12 weeks and the birth and I think I'd actually lost weight before that, certainly didn't put on, barely showed until over 6 months. Partly because of sickness. Baby was fine though!

My mum lost 2 stone in each of her 3 pregnancies, we were all born at over 8 lb.

HalfFrench · 11/06/2008 09:58

Just to let everyone know I saw the midwife yesterday, all was fine and she was happy to go through my concerns. Measured up well and heart beat sounded very good so big smiles from me!!! {

Thanks to all for your reassuring messages x Now I just have to sort out my bottom issues, hmmmmmmmmmm

at all you skinny people who have hardly gain any. I am just over 27 weeks and about to pass 2 stone in weight gain. Yuck yuck yuck!

hopefully · 11/06/2008 11:36

gained

pigleychez · 11/06/2008 12:28

Im now 35.5 weeks have have just reached the stone mark.

Midwife asked how much id put on and was shocked as usually people say much more.. but she said everythings fine and babies healthy so count yourself lucky!

Have noticed that its gone on quicker in the past few weeks though..still ill be happy with stone and a half total. My MIL is very jealous as she put on 4stones when pregnant with my DH.

bethoo · 11/06/2008 12:39

in my first pregnancy i had a neat bump until about 30 weeks when i suddenly grew! i gained a stone and a half but lost it almost immedietly.
the second time round i am now 23 weeks and neat again and just the other day i was chattingto another pregnant lady and when i said i was 24 weeks she could not believe it as she had nto even realised i was pregnant!
so do not worry as we are all different. as long as the baby is fine all is well.
