Experience of viability scan at 7 weeks

Id love to hear the (good and bad) thoughts on viability scans at 7 + 3/ 7+4 weeks. I'm not sure how I'll get through christmas and ny without family realising I'm not drinking and digging into smoked salmon and brie, but my nhs scan won't be scheduled until end of January.

Pretty confident of my dates so I'll be just over 7 weeks if I take the latest appointments available before christmas.

Has anyone had needless worry because they went before 8 weeks? Or did it provide the reassurance needed to tell family before the nhs scan?

If you are sure on your dates then 7 + 3/4 days will show you a bean with a heartbeat and should give you the reassurance you need that the pregnancy is progressing as it should xx

I had one and there was a little flickering heart - not a heartbeat as such but that was the point of the scan. If you're sure on your dates then you should have the same. The difference between that one and the NHS on terms of the baby growing is huge!

I’ve had loads due to miscarriages in the past. You’d see a tiny embryo and bearing cells where the heart is forming. Why not just book in a scan to help reassure yourself in the next week or two, by the. You’ll see the head and arm / leg buds I think too - good luck and just double check what you can and can’t eat as it’s usually unpasteurised cheese etc to avoid but a lot of UK cheese is pasteurised … saying that my kids are teens so I may be forgetting lots lol

I had a 7 week scan with my last pregnancy and definitely saw a heartbeat. If it was IVF or high risk they'd do a 7 week scan as routine..

CanIclonemyselfplease · 01/12/2025 14:33

I found it very reassuring to hear the heartbeat after previous loss. It's a good sign, but just to be aware that it doesn't mean the pregnancy will continue to progress to the 12 week mark.

I had a miscarriage at 9 weeks first time ( scan showed stop gowing at 6 weeks) then a scan at 8 weeks second time which was reassuring.

Nothing to do with telling family though. Never occurred to me to keep it secret so I had already told them well before 8 weeks both times.

Thank you, I was really hoping to get responses like this. I've had a few chemical pregnancies and a mmc, so whilst I am prescribed a low dose of progesterone I dont seem to meet the high risk criteria for an early NHS scan. I suppose I was worried that if 7 weeks is too early I'm setting myself up for more anxiety.

I've booked the scan based on the replies, so fingers crossed!

By the time you are 7 to 8 weeks pregnant the risk of miscarriage dramatically drops. Obviously this is just an average but instead of 15 to 20% it goes down to 8 to 10% at 7 weeks. If your scan shows a healthy baby with a heartbeat, you are most likely to have a successful pregnancy. There’s never a safe zone even past 12 weeks but I do think that bit of extra reassurance before you tell people at Christmas will give you just what you need. Xx congratulations.

I’m 7 weeks 2 days today, had a MMC twins in the past and I know it’s such an anxious time

When are you due? If August, come join us on the pregnancy board - due in august!

I have just booked a viability scan for exactly 8 weeks a few days before xmas. I wanted it to be as close to 8 weeks as possible but you would be very likely to still see the heartbeat still at 8w!

Sabrinatheblue · 01/12/2025 18:47

Im due at the start of August, if everything works out Sunnycrispwinterrobin. Thanks, if the first scan goes ok I'll look at joining the August thread

We went for a scan at 7w+5 and were able to make out the head and body and have a little video which shows a heart flicker. It was good as I then had a photo to show my parents who were going away travelling and will still be away for my 12 week scan on Wednesday.

We told early as if anything happened when they were away I’d know I wish I had told them before hand to have had that happy moment.
