May have breathed in fumes 5 weeks pregnant

Hello, I was cooking on the hob this evening and unfortunately the flame from the hob started melting the pan handle. It was smoking when I realised and had no choice but to sort it myself as was home alone. The house stinks and I’m so worried I breathed in the fumes because the handle has melted and I could taste the smell and it was on my hands. I’ve been outside ever since getting fresh air while the house airs out.

If anyone has any advice that would be much appreciated. I am 5 weeks today x

You’ll be absolutely fine. I’m not saying this to be horrible but this’ll be a very long, very stressful pregnancy if you worry about every little thing like this the whole way through. Good luck with everything and congratulations on your pregnancy.

There’s not a problem. This is not something to worry about.

No choice but to sort it myself... Yeah, I should think so.

Sunandstar123 · 29/11/2025 17:57

Thank you both! I really appreciate your response.
I’ve actually been pregnant before and was okay anxiety wise.
I think it’s because I’d never done this before and the smell was really awful. I don’t usually worry about every last thing but for some reason this got to me this evening! The logical part of my brain is saying if it wasn’t enough to make me ill / dizzy etc it was very little exposure.

All I meant is being pregnant breathing in that doesn’t feel ideal so had my OH been in he would have dealt with it whilst I got fresh air, incase you hadn’t realised the worry around the post was the fact I am pregnant not because I didn’t want to sort what I did

I had realised the 'worry' as it was presented. However, the real concern would be a serious fire caused by an adult not acting responsibly and swiftly to prevent more than a minor inconvenience, due to a dramatic reaction based on a misconception.

Hiptothisjive · 29/11/2025 18:09

At five weeks it isn’t an issue. The body hasn’t taken over from the embryo yet.

As someone has said - it’s going to be a long pregnancy if there is this much worry already.

RhododendronFlowers · 29/11/2025 18:15

Please don't worry, the occasional exposure to this kind of thing won't be harmful at this stage in your pregnancy. You were right to get fresh air, though.
Just try to forget about it now and relax..

For what’s it worth I acted very swiftly and sorted it, it was afterwards I was concerned about breathing it in, but thanks for the concern.

Thanks everyone else for the kind responses, you have made me feel better. X

You will be absolutely fine!! Probably more dangerous to walk round London for long periods breathing in fumes. It’s hard not to worry but try and not worry - lots of people don’t realise they are pregnant then and are doing a lot worse! Congratulations! Xx

No need for the wanky response?

No need for the wanky response?

I gave a simple comment in reaction to events recounted in the original post and got a 'wanky' response accusing me of not understanding what she was getting at.

I could have said far more about what I thought of her generally and how she'd chosen to speak to me and just settled for pointing out it wasn't that I was too thick to get it, but it had come from a measured response.

It’s all good everyone, I thought it had come across like I shouldn’t have been the one to sort it, which wasn’t at all what I meant and didn’t want anyone to think that, so wanted to clarify. Was just explaining as part of the post that I was in close proximity to it whilst sorting it out, that’s all it meant.

Thanks again for responses x

Don’t worry, OP. Literally nothing you said could have been taken in any negative or disrespectful way, there are just some people out there who want to take offence to everything and be unkind in their responses.

Bottom line: Please do not worry about it. I actually did a similar thing when I was in the first early weeks of my pregnancy with my first son (who is perfectly fine). I managed to melt something in the microwave and the kitchen had to be majorly aired out!
