Induction, sobbing in outpatients

looking for a handhold here…

So I’ve been having routine growth scans the last two showed increased umbilical artery pressure and the last growth showed reduced growth. Because of this I have been having daily monitoring and a planned induction at 38 weeks ( tomorrow).

Todays growth scan just to see how small baby was shown the artery pressure was now normal and baby was back on the 50th centile.. after this the midwife said we don’t need to induce a healthy baby and asked how I felt I said I was anxious either way I didn’t want to risk a sicker baby by inducing early but also would be scared of still birth if wait ( I struggle to be confident in babies movements, whether I’m over thinking it). Anyway the midwife and me agreed a good plan would be to postpone induction until next week with daily monitoring.

She then rang the doctor who said no she still advices to induce ( but wouldn’t come down to speak to me ) so the midwife said it’s still up to me and I can go against medical advice and decline the induction. I said I couldn’t as even if something unrelated tragic happened after declining the induction I’d blame myself ( I also lost a pregnancy last year ). Basically I left sobbing saying it was too big a choice so I will follow the Doctors decision and are still booked for a induction tomorrow.

Another one saying baby will be grand at that gestation.
Both mine were spontaneous at 37+5 and 38+2. Both were absolutely perfect and other than jaundiced, had no challenges.
Best of luck, if I were in your position I would induce as well!

I had a similar situation. I was advised a c section (not uk - far quicker to give a section where I was) and dd was born at 37 weeks exactly. Strong and healthy and barely had an unwell day in her life. She’s 15 now. I think you have made the right choice. The stress of what if wouldn’t be good for anyone in the coming days

If everything is fine, then I'd wait to 40weeks.

ApocalypseCow · 28/11/2025 13:31

I’ve had 3 inductions - all absolutely fine. All at 38 weeks. Babies were definitely ready. Although first baby was a little jaundiced (yellow) no health problems. Good luck and congratulations you will fine. Easier said than done, but try to stay calm!

I was scared to be induced because I heard so many negative things about induction. Mine was nothing like anyone had told me.
I had a smooth fast induction. The longest part was waiting on the ward to be induced but once I had the balloon inserted within an hour my waters broke and and hour later ds arrived. I was induced at 36 weeks 5 days.

Snapplepie · 28/11/2025 14:03

My first baby was 37+3, my second was 38+1. Both totally fine and no interventions needed. 37 weeks is considered full term, there wont be any problem having them this week rather than next! Good luck! X

For me I think I would definitely opt for the induction tomorrow. At 38 weeks baby is fully developed. Once you get to 37 weeks the baby isn’t classed as premature. My first was expected to be on the small side. I had growth scans and whilst they seemed fine, she remained small. I was told that if there are any concerns, however small, once you get to around 38 weeks they would rather induce and get baby out. If they aren’t growing as well inside, it’s much easier to do something about it once they out. And I would imagine that applies to any concerns really at this stage. Whilst inside it’s limited what they can do. So I was told at that stage there really is no benefit to keeping baby inside.

I was induced and my daughter was born at 39 weeks. Perfectly healthy and we went home the following day.

You got this!

Mine were both inductions at 37 weeks and born at 37+1 and 37+6. First one was a vaginal birth and the second a C-section (nothing to do with the induction, he just got himself stuck). Both were wonderful positive births, and if I ever have a third and needed induction again I absolutely would go for it. Other than a spot of mild jaundice for each they've both been happy and healthy. My eldest is at school and flourishing. My second starts next September and I suspect he's going to do the same.

Just to update all . During my induction both my blood pressure and babies heart rate went right down and the emergency call button had to be pulled twice. At this point we ended up having an emergency C section. I know I made the right choice from seeing her happy and well.

Baby is a healthy 6 pound 4 :) thanks again fur everyone’s support.

I've just seen this thread. You absolutely made the right choices all the way through under very difficult circumstances. I remember very well being overwhelmed by the decision-making during my first birth which also ended in an emergency section. My gorgeous baby girl is now a formidable 23yo.

Well done and congratulations on your beautiful baby girl Flowers

Congrats on your new baby, hope you recover well. Always trust your mum instincts now. Best of luck

Dagda · 02/12/2025 08:25

Congratulations 🙌🏻. Enjoy your beautiful baby and look after yourself. It’s no joke having an induction followed by a CSection.

Booksandsea · 02/12/2025 08:50

I was induced at 37 weeks, similar reasons - small baby and my placenta was starting to fail. It all went smoothly and baby was born healthy. 37 weeks is considered full term so 38 weeks you’ve really nearly got to very end. Get that baby out and enjoy extra few weeks of cuddles.
