6 weeks 5 days pregnant… horrendous all day nausea from the second I wake up to the moment I go to bed. Currently taking anti sickness tablets but they only take the edge off slightly.

I had HG with my 3 year old but it’s a lot harder this time, dealing with a toddler whilst being unwell. I’ve already had to take time off work and tell them I’m pregnant.

I know I’m so early that it could be weeks or months until the nausea lifts.

Has anyone else felt similar before?

Although I didn’t vomit, I had severe feelings of nausea all the way through. Travel sickness bands were the only thing that helped. Sorry it’s so shit, you’re doing great.

Purplewotsit · 27/11/2025 20:18

I had HG with both of my children - it's horrible, and I sympathise. Ondansetron alongside 2 other antisickness medications eased the nausea enough that I could move - the nausea will still there but more manageable. I still spent a lot of time asleep.

The nausea associated with HG is not normal, ginger will not fix it, and honestly medication is the only thing that can dial it down, and even then it's not by much.

Jok77 · 27/11/2025 20:18

Hyperemesis is horrible, it spoilt my one and only pregnancy. I tried 3 medications, 3rd one I was on for most of my pregnancy (Phenergan). I took it before bed, then from 6 months took a dose in the morning. Went on sick from 6 months! Rehydration drip was a life saver!
Avoid ginger if you are vomiting as it burns on the way out! I found eating dry toast in bed at 5am helped a bit. Dont eat big meals, just snack. Fizzy sweets helped. I took 2 Orange Rennies at bed time to help with reflux.
If you are struggling please seek help.

boredoflaundry · 27/11/2025 20:19

Yep! For 30+ weeks. Twice.
find what works for you

I found being sick and then eating something salty helped me. But I was sick 10+ times a day! Needed to get rid of the “morning sickness orange” pile!
if I was hungry I needed to eat, be sick and eat again. And make sure you stay hydrated whilst you can keep things down.
also eat little and often.

Try having lime and soda drinks, mint in various forms (menthol bonbons, chocolate mint, etc) it will refresh your mouth and help with nausea.
hang in there it should ease off soon.
congratulations on your pregnancy, you are very lucky 🍀

She might not feel lucky with HG.

31weeksgone · 27/11/2025 20:23

I’m right here with you OP, I’m 9 weeks and utterly miserable. It’s pregnancy number 3 for me so I’m well practiced by now.

I’ve had cyclizine, and Prochlorperazine. That last one did help a bit more than the cyclizine but now I’m on my third one and my last two pregnancies it didn’t exist. XONVEA. It’s life changing. I feel SO much better. Still a bit up and down but on the whole eating and drinking and coping.

PLEASE go to the GP and put your foot down, they do make you try the cyclizine first as a first line defence as XONVEA is expensive, but after 2/3 days you can comfortably say it isn’t working and try this it’s genuinely wonderful I’m so glad it’s been introduced for HG sufferers. You have to put your foot down and demand help. If you can’t keep any fluids down in 12-24h go to early pregnancy or triage and they’ll probably give you a drip.

Good luck. Xx

UnintentionalArcher · 27/11/2025 20:46

I have. Answering quickly so others may have said this, but if your current medication isn’t having effect, and you’ve it for a while, go back to doctor. Cyclizine did not work for me and nor did Prochloperazine (though that was better). Ondansetron was more effective though I was still very sick - not sure if this one is recommended in first trimester. I was also on Omeprazole as part of my sickness was reflux-related.

Yes true, sorry I meant in general just having had success conceiving as so many ladies struggle to get that far unfortunately. But see what you mean. All the best OP

Richtea67 · 27/11/2025 21:02

I remember this OP and do sympathise! The only time I didn't feel sick was when asleep...so try to sleep as much as you can. Also the anti sickness wrist bands took a bit of the edge off. But I found I had to wear them 24/7 as the benefit seemed to build up over time. I had accupuncture in my 1st pregnancy, which helped....but strangely this didn't make a difference in my second or third. Take one day at a time, try not to think ahead to how much longer it could go on!

Foodylicious · 27/11/2025 21:07

Definitely go back to your GP and try another medication.
I remember reading the earlier you can get (at least some) control of it, the less bad its likely to get.
Good luck. It's hideous.

Nomnomnew · 27/11/2025 21:18

Definitely echo what others have said about getting more / different antisickness medications. To get mine to a bearable level in the first trimester I needed ondansetron, cyclizine, prochlorperazine, omeprazole and xonvea and then I was able to reduce to just ondansetron and xonvea later on. Xonvea wasn’t available in my first pregnancy but was honestly a total game changer in my second. Push for that if you can.

I had HG both pregnancies, but it is so much harder second time with a toddler. Take time off work (get signed off) and rest as much as you can. If your partner or family can help with your toddler then get as much help as possible. I used to take my toddler to my parents house and then sleep a few hours.

I’d also recommend getting a peer supporter from Pregnancy Sickness Support, it was a lifeline for me. My partner couldn’t offer much emotional support because he was so busy just trying to keep us all going, and I had really complex and difficult feelings about how ill I was, feeling guilty for my toddler, feeling fearful of losing so much quality of life and being as ill as I was first pregnancy, guilt for not being as excited about the second pregnancy etc etc. My peer supporter was there on WhatsApp through it all and it was so so valuable.

I know it’s so hard right now, but you are stronger than you know. You can get through this.

floppybit · 27/11/2025 21:34

I was the same, I was sick most of my pregnancies, that’s why I only had 2 kids! Im afraid I’ve got no advice as I never found anything that really helped, but I’m sending you solidarity and sympathy as it’s awful trying to look after a toddler when you’re feeling so dreadful!

DidIJustHearWhatIThinkYouSaid · 28/11/2025 01:31

To all those posters suggesting ginger, mints etc, with respect this does not work with full on hyperemesis. I was not only vomiting up all food that went in my mouth, I couldn’t even keep sips of water down. I ended up in hospital at 9 weeks on a drip and nil by mouth as I was severely dehydrated and had dropped to 6 stone in weight (from my pre pregnancy 7 stone). The hospital stay sort of ‘reset’ me and I was able to nibble small amounts of food after a week and the vomiting slowly stopped. Baby was fine (7.2).
OP, it’s hell on Earth at the time but hang on in there. Sending 💐

Try smelling essential oils, peppermint is the best. Sipping on ginger tea and a magnesium supplement

FarmWife23 · 28/11/2025 10:48

Hello, I’m on my third HG pregnancy (second to full term as I had a loss at 13 weeks with my first), I know how hard it is and how awful you feel and I considered termination with this pregnancy at about 8 weeks as between the sickness and a toddler I just couldn’t cope.

Pregnancy Sickness Support offer a peer support service with check ins over WhatsApp etc which is nice as it’s someone who just gets it. Do you have any family/friends who might be able to cook a few bits to stick in the freezer to feed your little one? Or is buying frozen ready meals an option to help through this first bit? Do you have any childcare? If so, is it possible to take some time off work so you can sleep while your little one is with childcare? Otherwise, lying down games, screen time and sticker books have been lifesavers for me.

Can you and your partner push for more/different medications from the GP or midwife? If you’re feeling very dehydrated and have access to an Early Pregnancy Unit or similar, try there too. I’ve ended up on a total concoction - Xonvea, Ondansetron and Metaclopramide with Cyclizine as a back up in case I sick up doses - and that has helped a bit, especially the Xonvea and Ondansetron. Otherwise, just nibble at whatever you can face - plain white toast, ready salted crisps, Tangfastics, watermelon and mango have been my main diet. Sipping at very cold sort of flat coke, or apple juice with a bit of lemonade mixed in, or even sucking ice cubes or lollies have helped even just to take the horrid taste out of my mouth and stop feeling so dry. It might well fade as your pregnancy progresses, but please please push for more medication to try and help. Don’t hide how much you are struggling, really push to any medical professionals how low you feel and hopefully they can get you some more help. I’m so sorry you’re going through this, I am nearly 37 weeks now and it’s such a physical and mental struggle xxx

Movinginthesunlight · 28/11/2025 10:55

Are you managing to eat much? I am forcing myself to eat regular meals and snacks, I have found whenever I start to feel nauseous i will eat a snack like a couple of dry crackers or a banana. I have gained a lot of weigh already! But at least it is taking away the sickness.

There have been a few occasions where I have really had to force myself to eat my dinner, but 45 mins or so later I feel so much better.

DefaultUsername001 · 30/11/2025 10:21

I’ve been feeling horribly sick, struggling to eat or even sip water. I tried gaviscon and that fixed it. Acid reflux is weird, sometimes you just get sickness/nausea without other symptoms. It’s more likely in pregnancy, even in the first trimester. Maybe try some gaviscon? If it helps a little but not fully there are stronger reflux meds doctors can prescribe.

Pinkosand · 30/11/2025 19:51

I've had intense all day nausia in all 3 of my pregnancies. In the last one I contacted pregnancy sickness support they are really helpful and can advise you on medications and give you emotional support as well.

SwirlyShirly · 30/11/2025 19:57

Take someone with you to advocate for you and get a different or additional medication. I had cyclizine, metoclopramide and ondansetron which got me through to the end. I am sending you all my sympathies and best wishes, I know what you’re going through and it is horrific.

Thank you for everyone’s kind comments.

after doing some research on good old Google, I came across a thread where people recommended Gaviscon as a lot of sickness can be caused by stomach acid. Although this is something that I haven’t had before I thought I’d give it a go because I was desperate and I can confirm that it does help. It’s not a miracle worker and the sickness is still there. But after a few minutes I’ve taken some Gaviscon. I do feel that it takes away about 30% of the nausea feeling.

I’ve reached out to pregnancy sickness support charity and they recommended omeprazole so I might give that a go

Obviously, I’ve tried the sipping on lemonade or eating ginger biscuits, but I personally find that if your sickness is quite severe a ginger biscuit is just not gonna help. In fact, even the thought of ginger is making me feel ill right now!

Have you tried 'Travel Bands' aka 'Sea Bands' that you can buy in Boots or on Amazon?

Think they were originally marketed for motion sickness but my sister found them helpful with severe nausea in pregnancy.

As they're just acupuncture no harm in giving them a go, my sister pretty much wore them for 9 months solid.

I got to the stage where I couldn’t even look at ginger people

also, bizarrely constipation can also cause nausea so lactulose and fybrogel may also be your friends

goos luck

How are you doing today OP? I’m glad you’ve reached out to PSS and have some other things to try. I hope you’re getting some relief.
