12 week scan Thursday

I will have my 12 week scan on Thursday. But I feel I have been given no information at all by the midwives or in the letter from the hospital. It will be at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.

Will I have to have a full or empty bladder?
Do I need to take a water sample?
What do I eat before making the sample as it is an 8.30am apt?
Does anybody know if it will be a straight forward scan or a nuchal fold one as I am 37?
Will I see a midwife at the hosp?

This is my 3rd pg but my boys are now 8 and 10 so it has been a while, I think that they look at the notes, see I already have 2 children, so do not give me all the tiny details. I must tell them I want to be treated as a know nothing first timer

bumping this for you - at twelve weeks I am not sure if it is essential to have full bladder (depends on scan machine) but I do think it is probably advisable to have a full bladder just in case. you get a clearer picture at that stage as pushes uterus up.

Re nuchal fold etc - i think that depends on teh area and if they offer that asa amatter of routine. can you phone the hospital and ask?

Re water sample -presumably if you are seeing m/w they usually like to do that but it depends if you are actually seeing m/w or just having a scan - the two things are usually seperate. And there is no rule I'm aware of about not eating before giving a sample.

Can you ring the hospital and ask for bit more details on appt?

You should have a full bladder.

Do take a sample.

Don't worry about eating - just do your usual.

I doubt it will be a nuchal - they are not often done on the nhs and it is a personal choice whether to have one - not automatic. You might have to get that done privately if you want it. Be sure to ask as you haven't much time if you do.

You should see a nurse/midwife I think.

Good Luck with getting information - they seem to busy to bother these days...

must be different in different areas as im getting my 12 wk scan on 20 June (by then i will be just over 13wks) and ive to go to hospital for it and ive got my first midwife appointment on the 23rd June. Its quite rubbish in edinburgh area as you only get one scan grrrrrrrrr although i had an early one at 6wks to double check hehe.

i have to say im totally excited as its my first baby and a miracle xxx

I have never had to have a full bladder for any of my scans!

missmama · 09/06/2008 13:46

Thanks everybody for the advice.
Even if it is all conflicting
DH has just phoned to say his shifts change Wednesday so he can come after all, was really worried about going on my own.
Might phone the hosp to see what they say - if they answer the phone.

I dont usually eat in the mornings, but thought the sample might be more favorable if I did. I am a little (Lie Lie) overweight and do not want to influence sugar in the water and such in the wrong direction.

Hi - I was told by the sonographer that a full bladder was completely unnecessary.

I live in north london and nuchal fold at 12 week scan is standard (Hackney).

I'd only take a pee sample if I'd been asked to - what would you put it in...?

Agree with previous posters that I doubt you'll see a midwife. But if in doubt - just ask.

Hope that helps.

I have my 12 week scan on Friday and my letter states that a full bladder is not necessary at any stage in pregnancy, but I know it does depend on the machine. Also, in my area the nuchal fold is routine but I also think that is dependant on the area!

So, no help at all really but good luck all the same
