4weeks pregnant and feeling sad!

I’ve recently found out I’m pregnant, which I’m super happy about after trying for 4 years!
But I just feel so sad, crying multiple times a day… Did anyone else have this?

@MaddM perhaps sit with the feeling for a moment and explore where the sadness may be coming from? What's driving this feeling, is it rational?

MaddM · 25/11/2025 15:02

@Outside9 Since I found out I have cut down on caffeine, stopped smoking and stopped taking citalopram which are the things I can think of making me feel this way. I just wondered if any pregnant ladies felt this way so early on x

Well then I can imagine that's having an impact. It will get easier. Well done on making healthy choices. Best of luck OP.

@NotrialNodeal thank you! X

@MaddM Cutting out the things you mention will definitely have an affect on you mood. If I gave up caffeine and cigarettes, I'd probably be a wreck. But also you've been trying to get pregnant for a long time. The "trying" has become a huge part of your life. Your thoughts, hopes and energy have all been focused on one goal for 4 years. Now it's a reality, you are sort of left without that ambition (for want of a better word). Does that make sense?

MaddM · 25/11/2025 16:06

@ginasevern thank you, that is very true! This just isn’t what I imagined, don’t get me wrong I’m so happy and excited to be pregnant. I just didn’t expect to be crying multiple times a day, I guess I just feel really silly x

Congratulations! Your hormones are all out of whack probably. When I was first pregnant, I felt flat, not excited. I didn't want to get too excited iyswim. Then I suffered from morning sickness so still didn't feel great. It'll probably pass in time.

MaddM · 27/11/2025 14:05

Thank you! Hope you don’t mind me asking, but how did you get through it? The doctor has advised me to start citalopram again

Start the citalopram like he says- the advice in pregnancy is to keep taking it, as the benefits of you being healthy, well and stable far outweigh the benefits of pausing it. You deserve to have a happy, healthy pregnancy and to just stop it at the same time that all of your hormones start shooting up and down is the last thing you need.

Huge Congratulations on your much wanted baby xxx

Absolutely all of those things and the hormones will be it! That’s a LOT of change. Also citalopram is safe on pregnancy so keep an eye on your mood.

@Bumblebee413thank you so much! Yes I think I’m going to start the medication again, as right now I just want to be happy and to enjoy this special time x

@Newsenmum Yes I think now I’ve just pushed myself to far

Deffo re start the meds. I stopped my adhd meds and within 2 weeks I was absolutely unstable.

Bumblebee413 · 23/12/2025 20:37

@MaddM hoe are you feeling now? X

PamelaShipman80 · 23/12/2025 20:58

Both of mine were very much planned and I had this feeling, so sad and down. I think at the time I blamed it on the sickness making me feel anxious and unable to enjoy the time, but in hindsight was probably anti natal depression. It shifted (along with the sickness) at 11-12 weeks and I felt great for the rest of the pregnancy with no post natal depression (actually the happiest I’ve been in my life). I hope you’re feeling better soon, congratulations on your news

bondsy · 24/12/2025 11:49

@MaddM how are u feeling now? I’m 26 weeks and been on citalopram my whole pregnancy. Had multiple consultations and they all advised me it was better for me to stay on the medication.
