what I can't eat? Just found out I'm pg again and I'm blooming well off on holiday to Italy on Tuesday so that's booze, Parma ham and gorgonzola off the menu but I can't remember what else (though I'm sure it's all changed since DS was born 3 years ago anyway).

Can anyone fill me in please?

Ok, so prawns and otehr sea food are Ok if cooked? I can forgo salad and uncooked soft cheese but please tell me that it isn't true about gelato or I don't think I'll bother going! I know Mr Whippy style icecream can harbour listeria because they don't clean the nozzles properly but surely the kind of gelato you'd buy there would be relativley safe?

Well, I didn't know ice cream van icecream was a listeria risk and thus have been happily chugging them down all spring. Baby is (hopefully) so far unaffected!

KnickersonMaHead - are you kidding - icecream is a bloat fest for bacteria - you have sugar and fat, superating in a nice warm car. The outside of it starts to fester, then you refreeze it but that doesn't kill the bugs, it just let's them have a little kip till you get it out again and put it in the dish.

posieparker · 08/06/2008 20:34

Pate, no pate... boo hoo.

posieparker · 08/06/2008 20:35

It's Mr Whippy ice cream not the nice stuff that's bad isn't it?

posieparker · 08/06/2008 20:36

Shellfish is to avoid food poisoning aswell as other stuff, isn't it?

sherbetdipdab · 08/06/2008 20:45

Actually I do avoid pate, but its because it has high vit A which can cause birth defects. Other than that its just try and avoid getting food poisoning, which I do anyway. I wonder if the Italian women avoid all the things like parmesan, tiramisu etc while pregnant? Does anyone know?

thehouseofmirth · 08/06/2008 20:48

Why are parmesan and mozarella OK? I thought
the good stuff was unpasteurised?

I'm prepared to take my chances with anything that might make just me sick so can anyone give me a definitive list of stuff I need to avoid so I don't feel guilty about potentially hurting my offspring?

OP posts:
posieparker · 08/06/2008 20:49

They're not, cheddar's not okay if not pasteurised.

For those of you who refuse to believe, from the Foods Standards Agency website:

Foods you don't need to avoid

It can be confusing trying to work out which foods you can eat and which foods you should avoid when you're pregnant. You might find it helpful to look at this list of some of the foods you don't need to avoid:

Shellfish, including prawns - as long as they are part of a hot meal and have been properly cooked

Live or bio yoghurt
Probiotic drinks
Fromage frais
Creme fraiche
Soured cream
Spicy food

Mayonnaise, ice cream, salad dressing - as long as they haven't been made using raw egg. Generally, mayonnaise, ice cream and salad dressing you buy in shops will have been made with pasteurised egg, which means it's safe to eat. But it's better to avoid home-made versions if they contain raw egg. If you're not sure about any of these foods when you're eating out, ask staff for more information

Honey - it's fine for pregnant women but honey isn't suitable for babies under a year old

Many types of cheese including:
Hard cheese, such as Cheddar and Parmesan
Feta
Ricotta
Mascarpone
Cream cheese
Mozzarella
Cottage cheese
Processed cheese, such as cheese spreads

So all of these are absolutely fine to eat.

Cantsleepwontsleep - I think the FSA ought to add: 'provided you store them properly and don't let them go off numbnuts'

whomovedmychocolate · 08/06/2008 22:28

Also, go ask a french woman if she avoids wine and soft cheese when pregnant. She'll probably need a good laugh with the rigid obstetric care in France!

TettyLouBar · 09/06/2008 20:23

Ive eaten everything! 40+2 today so it's a little late now, although I have stayed away from pate.

barbareebaa · 09/06/2008 20:58

My mw told me to avoid parmesan because it isn't pasturised so apologies if it is wrong info- just going with what I've been advised..

Have a fabulous time

thehouseofmirth · 09/06/2008 23:06

Thanks for all the advice. Still a bit confused but at least it gives me a bit of leeway...

Now just hoping the morning sickness doesn't kick in on the journey - we are taking Eurostar and sleeper from Paris to Rome. Wish me luck!
