SPD / PGP in second pregnancy; how to stay mobile

I had very bad SPD in my first pregnancy four years ago; crutches, housebound then bed bound, grim. I had good manual therapy and wore a Serola belt but it wasn’t enough to keep me mobile and not in debilitating and constant pain. It continued for a long time after the birth - 18 months of considerable pain all the time and another year of twinges.

I waited a long time until I was properly healed and mobile before attempting another pregnancy and now I’m 14 weeks in and - it hurts - again. That crunching feeling rolling over in bed. Stiffness and shuffling. It’s not too bad yet, but it’s the start and I am so worried about what lies ahead.

Wise women of mumsnet; what can you tell me about your experience of pregnancy after SPD in a previous pregnancy; what helped, what didn’t, how you managed to keep it at bay or at least delay its onset if you did? I would be so grateful for any advice that might see me in better shape come the arrival of this baby than I was last time. I want to be able to go for a walk with baby and not spend the first six months of baby’s life shuffling from the bed to the sofa. Please let me know whatever you think would be helpful about your experiences.

Hey OP, sorry, I don't have any advice but I just wanted to say I share your worries and hopefully someone comes alongnl to help.

I had PGP too - although not to the same extent as you, which sounds so difficult - and I am now pregnant with number 2.

I am really worried as it was so uncomfortable even trying to roll over in bed, and getting out of bed was just awful, as were the first few steps I took every day. And this was all when I didn't have a 3 year old to manage and carry about too.

Dreading it. Really hope it goes better for you this time round.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences, and I’m really sorry you’ve been through this too. Let’s hope someone has some good advice for us both. I really share your feelings of anxiousness about what lies ahead. And then feel guilty for being so worried about it all when I’m pregnant with a dearly-wanted baby.

It would be great to hear from some women who had PGP but managed better pregnancies second time around.
