1 in 240 chance of Down Syndrome

Hello, I am here for some positive stories. My combined screening for DS in 13 weeks showed 1:240 chance of DS which in the UK is considered low risk , hence NIPT was not offered. I am 39, NT 1.7, PAPP-A .78, beta HCG 2.0. I didn’t worry much at that time as the NHS considers anything below 1:150 as low risk. I did ask my midwife as well as the US technician at my 20 weeks scan if I need NIPT and was told that with low risk there is no need for it. However, I am 34 weeks now and I just can’t shake the feeling away and keep regretting not doing the NIPT. Iam here for positive stories of moms who had similar risks in the combined screening test and did not do the NIPT and baby was born without DS. I shall be really grateful, thank you.

Ds2 had a 1:2 chance of being born with DS. He wasn't.

Justmadesourkraut · 17/11/2025 12:02

Sorry. Posted too soon. And we didn't to the NIPT. I was a little older than you.

I understand of course your anxiety. Not knowing is so difficult but I used the time to educate myself on DS and to meet some wonderful people online, who were able to support us through those last weeks. It helped enormously and I read many positive stories and found much joy out there.

Your chances of having a baby with DS are very small. Try to keep that in focus and don't let it dominate your thinking.

Hi thank you so much for your reply. I have been trying my best to not let these thoughts over power my rational thinking but it’s so hard. Your experience does help a lot. Thank you again 🙂

1 in 240 means 1 in an ordinary sized primary school, it’s definately low chance.

And I say that as someone who has a child with DS (ours was 1 in 3). Best wishes, try to relax.

Hi, mine came back 1 in 330. I don't know hcg level but NT was 1.9 and pap-a was 1.4. I'm also 39 and now 24 weeks and like you I was worrying at first as other people seemed to be getting much higher odds and I couldn't understand why? I'm assuming maybe my hcg was high (I have been extremely sick) and obviously my age. But I'm just trusting now and hoping everything is fine! It's low odds for both of us, it just seems bad because others get like 1 in 5000 etc but it's still low chance. Try not to worry and look forward to meeting your little one very soon!! ❤️ x

Sounds like it is probably about the level expected for someone having a child at 39.

I am 37 and got a 1:78 chance. I did do the NIPT, came back low risk.

That is so true. A friend of mine, who is older than me has a chance of 1:5000. This makes me even more stressed. But it’s great that you have been able to keep your worries at bay, I really hope I can do the same. Thank you for your positive words

Hey i hav a risk of 1/320 and again used the primary school method thinking its really quite old. Its useful to know your age related risk is 1/270 for 35 and 1/100 for 40 so even without any other stats those are the stats they begin with, its also useful to note that chances are in the 20w scan etc any major issues especially those related to DS would have beenn picked up. I spoke to my midwife and she said its clear my low pap-a is what skewed my risk but NT was nice and thin and overal its still a very low risk to have

Lougle · 17/11/2025 19:48

It's 99.6% likely that your baby does not have DS.

I suppose how high risk that is to you depends on how much you would find having a child with DS a challenge. I didn't have the triple test when I was pregnant with DD1 (nuchal fold wasn't on offer then anyway) because I wouldn't have had an amnio, so there was no point. Other people want all the tests.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 17/11/2025 20:04

Dc2 was a 1:52 risk. I was 32.

We didn’t have any additional testing and he doesn’t have DS

Hey OP, thanks for sharing this post. I also came back with a 1 in 240 probability. I haven't been provided with all my results like you, but I'm aware my NT was 1.9mm which I understand is within expected range.

We've opted to privately NIPT test and now waiting on those results. Hopefully all has worked out ok with you
