So I’m currently 28 weeks pregnant with baby boy , under a consultant for previous losses aged 42 and under active thyroid !
anyway 28 week growth scan shows baby measuring “normal” on the 50th percentile but his head is above that at the 92nd percentile! I am freaking out after reading DR GOOGLE!
my consultant doesn’t seem at all phased or worried about it! Anyone have any insights please 🙏🏻
i must add my 9 year old son was always tiny on the 9th percentile

My baby was born with a head on the 99.99th centile. I only had a very first degree tear and labour was straightforward. My obstetrician literally said (after baby was out!) any bigger and it wouldn’t have fit, but it was all ok!

My daughter was 7th percentile on weight and 99th percentile on head size 🤣
She was breach and her head was squeezed into a slightly rugby ball shape. You wouldn’t have known to look at her. I was hysterically though until she was born so I know how you feel. Take comfort in the fact the consultant isn’t worried though, they know more than us.

My daughter was similar, she just has a really big head! Cannot find hats that fit her but other than that, she's completely fine (and her head doesn't look particularly big or anything). I remember the health visitor looking shocked (but said it's nothing to worry about) when she measured her head and that worried me at the time but I have learned over the years to avoid Google!

I've had 18 growth scans between my two and honestly, sometimes they just can't measure accurately, one time the head might be huge, then the next it's normal range and the leg is short etc. Do you have another scan upcoming?

Are you worried about delivering a big headed baby or worried that the discrepancy between the two measurements means something?

Both my babies were huge - bump size, growth scan, and in real life. It’s genetic in their case (2 tall parents). No HCP was ever bothered. One of them said: centiles represent the range in existence - someone has to be top and someone has to be bottom, it doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

Hello thank you for your reply! I have another scan in 4 weeks at 32 weeks it’s going to be a long 4 weeks! I am freaking out that he’s going to have issues with the larger head! Obvs I shouldn’t rely on DR GOOGLE however some of the research shows larger headed babies are at increased risk for brain damage!

Worried about the big difference between the two and some research details higher risks for brain damage with larger headed babies! It’s going to be a long 4 weeks until my next scan 😩

My baby was 50th overall, average in every measurement but head insanely big. At 8 months the head was around 90th centile for a 2 year old! However I found out since that baby’s dad has 4 standard deviation above the mean head so it is just inherited. Paediatrician we saw for something unrelated checked the head, asked about dads head size and then said it was just familial and nothing to worry about.

Try not to worry, chances are the head isn't actually that big or it'll balance out. If they were concerned about it they would have told you or booked you in sooner than 4 weeks for monitoring, they were concerned about the belly measurement on one of mine so they booked me in sooner than expected for another measure, it was all fine and everything was normal range. Sometimes the positioning of the baby makes the measurements skew. I know it's worrying so telling you not to worry is a bit daft but as I said, if they were concerned you'd know about it :)
