erm - context is everything??!! I would tell medical professionals about a pregnancy as soon as practical after I found out??

You’re supposed to do it as soon as you find out so they can get you into the system and find a slot for your booking appointment www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/finding-out/your-first-midwife-appointment/

Immediately I found out, just to be in the system.

Will it be ok to wait until I’m 6 weeks? Will this delay care or scan?

Hi op, I was the same as you, I’ve had previous losses and with my last pregnancy and this pregnancy I waited till I was around 6 weeks before I contacted anyone. I had a scan done at EPU first and then once I knew everything was okay with the scan I went ahead and registered with my midwife, with my previous pregnancy I was actually seen the same day for the midwife after my scan for booking and with this pregnancy it was about a week later after my scan for booking, so I was around 7-8 weeks when I was seen by my midwife x

LaTable · 12/11/2025 11:19

In England with my 1st I declared basically the day I found out
The second, after multiple losses I think I waited until I was closer to 9 as I didn't even tell my husband until 8 weeks (yay denial)
Delaying didn't delay any scans or appointments for me, but I think it depends on location and how busy the maternity unit is. It also didn't affect any emergency epu appointments I had as again, location wise, my epu then was self referral.

Third was after chemical pregnancy stage (5weeks?) so I could get scans easier with my community midwife but this one wasn't in England and epus aren't a thing here

TeaRoseTallulah · 12/11/2025 11:21

I think I was about 8 weeks, I'm old enough that you went to see the GP and they referred you to the Midwife.

CatchHimDerry · 12/11/2025 11:29

a few weeks later due to previous losses, same as PP after a scan at EPU, maybe 7 weeks or so

No delay in care or scans at all

Deliberations · 12/11/2025 11:30

I'm sorry for your previous loss. So OK - I can understand why you don't want to share your news widely. However surely by telling the midwife etc you'll be in the best hands should there be anything of concern? You don't have to tell anyone else until you're ready.
I wish you the best of luck!

Good to hear you didn’t have any delays after holding off because I’m planning to do similar.

I got a positive pregnancy test this weekend and am already booked in with the EPU as I had a previous ectopic. I’m not planning to get in touch with midwives until the EPU have confirmed everything’s alright. I’m pretty sure last time the EPU referred me to the midwife themselves but I’ve moved to a new area so it might be different.

They do say to refer yourself to a midwife asap to make sure you get your appointments on time but I’d feel more comfortable waiting until after the EPU have done their checks.

No it was all good, all other stuff has been at the right times. We use Badger now and referred through that

Must say I prefer the old notes folder as I’m nosy and like to read it all!

Theres so many people don’t even know until 7/8 weeks anyway due to PCOS or anything that isn’t your typical 28 day LMP

GingerFox2021 · 12/11/2025 11:56

I told at 10-11 weeks. They put me on the system straight away and booked all necessary appts/scans for me.

Thank you! It’s just a feeling after loss that I feel like I’m jinxing things or being overly optimistic by putting my referral through xx

I self referred at 5 or so weeks, I've had previous losses so was hoping for an early scan (nope) and was seen for booking in at 8/9 weeks. I would have waited a little longer I'd I hadn't been hoping for a viability scan from the NHS which I had done privately
