Best knickers/ pads post c section?

I am booked in for a ELCS next week and have been looking at what underwear is best. I’ve had a lot of messages saying the frida disposable knickers are good but when I read reviews online a lot of people said they gave them a rash and something about them doesn’t appeal to me. I feel like they would be hot and irritating.

Ideally I just want cotton full briefs in a few sizes bigger. Can anyone recommend any specifically for after their c section that they found comfortable? Thanks!

It’s been a few years but I had 3 c-sections and the only pants for me were the M&S cotton full briefs. They come in a seven pack and are nice & high over the scar so feel very comfortable. Well worth the money, you deserve a bit of comfort!

I did go out and buy the disposable knickers having been very impressionable when buying things in preparation. If I got to do it again I wouldn’t bother. They were fine and comfortable but ridiculously expensive for something that was going to be chucked. I have no specific recommendation other than you’re on to the right idea with some nice big cotton pants probably in the next size up. I ended up just with some cheapo Primark ones after giving up on the Frida.

All the very best with the ELCS

I second the M&S multi packs knickers. I just used the Always incontinence pants for the first few days which were great. And then just used normal sanitary towels in the knickers after that

I also liked the massive M&S knickers (still wear them occasionally three years later, to DH’s chagrin 😂). I’m a 10-12 normally and bought a 12 so they were biggish but not oversized.

Standard Tena incontinence pants worked perfectly for me and they were cheaper than the Frida ones.

yes, big full ones in a bigger size than normal so they go up to belly button lol, I have had 2 planned c sections.

Thanks all that’s really helpful. I’ve picked up some bodyform (period pads of choice normally) super heavy/long pads so I’m hoping they’ll do. I remember with my first I had always night pads and they were fine.

Are these the knickers?

Yes they look the ones but I got them in black. Most comfortable underwear ever. I still wear mine when I’m feeling bleugh or just want to be cosy.
I got lilets maternity pads - they’re longer and have more coverage. I also still wear them on heavy days.

All the best for your c section and congratulations on your new arrival 🥰

Always discreet adult nappies were a complete and utter game changer for postpartum bleeding, especially at night (no pad to slip out of place and leak)
And the Frida Mom disposable pants or boy shorts were absolutely fantastic for the first few days of holding those humongous surfboard size pads in place. So incredibly stretchy and soft!

After that, yeah, big pants with night pads.

Cosyslippers2019 · 11/11/2025 05:16

They are not the easiest to get hold of but Always pads number 6 are incredible. I used to wear big pants, sometimes 2 pairs at the same time just if I felt I needed a bit more security. It doesn't last long. Congratulations!

JustMe2026 · 11/11/2025 05:45

Best thing a midwife told me use incontinence pants , wish I had know after first 2 kids, no leaks or worry or constant changing pads...always got them since with all my next ones tho

StarSB1712 · 12/11/2025 17:26

Thanks for the advice eveyone! I might take a mixture with me and see what works best.
I am very anxious about the ELCS as I don’t know what to expect, and do suffer with a bit of HA. Thanks for all your well wishes x

Definitely those M&S pants but size up. I had them for my first and still wear them. Just had my second and treated myself to some more.

I’m 7 weeks pp had an ELCS and had a great experience. I hope everything goes well with yours

One of the awesome things about sections is that often (though not always) there's less lochia. So it was all done and dusted within a few days both times for me.

I had full pants (but Tesco ones) and regular maternity pads for about 3 days before moving to lightish regular pads and then panty liners by maybe day 6.

Disposable pants would have been complete overkill for me.

Agree with the sizing up of M&S full briefs in black.

The only risk is OP… you’ll realise how comfortable they are and keep them long-term in your knicker drawer. They’re the gateway drug of massive unflattering pants.

Ahaha same.. I was wearing my post c section big pants for ages.. now I like the stretchy shorts which come really high up.
i find any knickers with a low rise really uncomfortable as they sit right on the c section scar/fold bit.
Immediately post c secrion i don't think any sort of disposal type pants are necessary - as others have said, panty liners/pads plus comfy knickers

Icecreamandcoffee · 12/11/2025 20:18

2 c-sections here. Another vote for the always postpartum disposable pants for night time and the first few days. Then as bleeding gets lighter M&S cotton full briefs in a size bigger. Or I wore my M&S cotton maternity briefs. Definitely go for the cotton ones as they are breathable.

They are dangerously comfortable. I had my first 4 and 1/2 years ago and I'm still wearing the M&S full briefs. Now 7 weeks PP and I've just bought myself some new M&S full briefs although currently debating keeping the maternity ones and wearing them as an extra layer for my stomach in the cold weather 😅🙃. My husband will be thrilled 🤪, but it didn't stop him making DD2 and he's already thinking about a DC3 in a few years time so the pants are not nearly as unsexy as we are led to believe 🫣😂.

Imenti · 12/11/2025 21:05

Primark! Black black black all the way so you don't feel bad if you leak and the price is good if you have to ditch them. I'm a size 10 and for a size 14 full briefs
I found the Superdrug maternity pads were the best. I'm not sure period pads will be enough for the first few days anyway although I've never seen the super heavy ones so they might be. Good luck!
