Are you likely to get HG in further pregnancies if you’ve already experienced it with your first?

I’m only four weeks with my second baby, so I don’t want to get too ahead of myself

I experienced HG with my son from 5 weeks until 13 weeks and I’m not gonna lie I’m a bit nervous to go through that again…. I’m just wondering if you are more likely to get it again if you’ve already had it

I had a miscarriage before having my son and had severe morning sickness (although not HG) as well

I had it with all 4.

I did in both pg.

I did in both pregnancies from 5 weeks to birth with second, from 7 weeks to birth with first. Second was worse in severity as well.

You’re more likely to get it but it’s not guaranteed. If you do get it, one thing you could ask your GP for is a medication called Xonvea, it’s relatively new in the UK but available in most of the country now, and a lot of women find it really helpful.

No not necessarily. For me - first pregnancy had it really bad but tapered off by end of second trimester, second pregnancy nothing at all, third pregnancy just a lower level sickness up until giving birth. It’s not a given.

I can recommend Xonvea too. I had terrible sickness from 6 weeks until 25 weeks with my first child. It’s been worse in my second pregnancy but Xonvea has really helped. I was initially told to take one tablet in the morning and one and night but found that made me too drowsy during the day. My doctor then advised taking both at night. I’m still occasionally sick first thing in the morning but then fine for the rest of the day. It’s been a lifesaver.

I had it with all three, the worst with the second.

BuffaloCauliflower · 08/11/2025 22:28

My best friend had it with no. 1,2 and 4 but not no. 3

Gossyboo · 08/11/2025 22:29

My friend had it with her first, but not her second.

I got it with my second after just having bad nausea with my first.

So not necessarily!

I had it with both of my babies. I have a daughter and a son and it went on longer with baby 2 which was my son. First time was from 7 weeks to 27, baby 2 was 6 weeks to 32 weeks plus I then had a knackered pelvic floor so occasionally threw up and wet myself.
It was miserable and I am so happy to see more medication being developed and made available to women in this position.

I had it with both pregnancies, though much worse with dc2.

HaNNaHC92 · 08/11/2025 22:50

I've had 4 children and I had it with all 4. It progressively got worse in every pregnancy. I would love more children but it was that bad I think it would kill me next time 😬

eacapade1982 · 08/11/2025 22:58

I had it from 5-24 weeks with both but it got more manageable from 19-20 weeks. Unfortunately you are likely to get it again. Omeprazole worked wonders for me in the second pregnancy (not a usual one to prescribe but thought to be safe in pregnancy). It allowed me to lead a more or less normal life and work rather than not being able to get out of bed/off the sofa. Good luck, you’ll get there whatever happens!

I have had 4 pregnancies birth two miscarriages then another birth. I had hyperemesis with the first 3 pregnancies minimal sickness with my last. I had hyperemesis twice in 4 months with my miscarriages both lost at 10 weeks so it was hard on my body. I knew that I if the next pregnancy was with hyperemesis and ended in miscarriage I didn't have it in me to do it again and we would have stopped trying.
