I have the original which says on the bottle is safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
But it contains sodium biocarbante which I’ve read we should avoid?
HELP!
Heartburn is sooooo bad! X

I was told by the pharmacist it was ok in pregnancy. But omezaprole was actually what helped.

Kate3150 · 05/11/2025 20:51

My pharmacist said it was fine too.
Im just so confused with the sodium biocarbante warning when its a main ingredient?
Maybe my own fault looking online 🫣

Where did you see the warning about avoiding sodium bicarbonate?

Thank you for the NHS link, that’s reassured me loads.
With that and the bottle saying it’s safe, that’s enough for me!
Must…..stop….Googling!!!!! X

Find some reputable sources, and stick to those.

NHS, NHS inform (Scotland so slightly different), Cleveland clinic, Parent Club, NCT, Canadian and Australian public health etc.

I've always taken it in pregnancy and the midwives never minded. As someone who uses it a lot outside of pregnancy for bad reflux, be mindful that if you're using it a lot it can affect your absorption of some vitamins.

I used to carry a giant bottle in my handbag and swig it throughout the day.

If you’re suffering I’d really recommend asking your Dr for omeprazole as a pp has mentioned. It’s amazing stuff!

Hmmm I'd be careful with certain heartburn pills. They've got some side effects but I'd look into it first then maybe speak to your doctor? I'm obvs not a doctor but I saw this earlier so may be helpful but have a thinkhttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-15276205/taking-pills-effects-heartburn-tests-DR-MARTIN-SCURR.html

Excess stomach acid is a cause of ulcers and tumours, as well as being uncomfortable. It's not that you start in a risk-free situation when you are deciding to take a PPI like omezaprole which, like all medication, has side effects. Rennies can give you kidney stones if you over-use them, for example.

I learnt this the hard way when pregnant with my daughter. I took Rennies like sweets as my heartburn was horrific - ended up with kidney stones at 32 weeks 😫 I'm currently 23 weeks with another little girl and my heartburn is unbearable but I don't dare touch Rennies this time! Been having gaviscon and gp has just prescribed me Omeprazole which really helps but I'm still so worried they might also cause them 😞 I'm obviously higher risk with having them before but if I don't take anything I'm literally up all night with agonizing heartburn!!! It's hard to know what to do for the best 😞
