Hi everyone - just after abit of advice

I’ve had the worst sickness you could imagine - can’t keep any food/drink down, been admitted to hospital etc. I’ve just been prescribed ordansetron however I’ve had a look online and seen there is a risk of cleft palate? I’m currently 9 and a half weeks pregnant so just feeling abit worried and wondering if anyone else had taken around this point and if all was ok? Would baby’s mouth already be formed by this point?

Thanks

Get over to the hyperemesis board! Have been there, both pregnancies spent most of 1st in hospital on a drip Due to it, 2nd started odanestron with consultant support and absolute game changer could actually semi function! No cleft palate here.

I see you've had no responses yet. I took it about 15 years ago during my third pregnancy, prescribed from about 6 or 7 weeks. All was fine with no palate or mouth issues. He's a strapping, healthy teenager now. Wishing you well.

I ended up taking it throughout my entire pregnancy from about the same stage as you are now. It made the whole pregnancy bearable and allowed me to keep food down, even though I still felt nauseous even on the drugs. For me totally worth it. My child was absolutely fine though I completely understand your worries. I would definitely request the medication again if I ever decide to become pregnant again (unlikely!). I really hope the sickness improves for you soon, one way or the other

Sorry @Boymum93 my 2nd who I took odansetron is about to turn 2..and like @CatsorDogsrule is a robust boy!

I was on ondansetron from about 6 weeks to literally the day I gave birth on both pregnancies. The risk is tint to baby - the risk of dehydration to mother is high. Have a think about contacting pregnancy sickness support (they do WhatsApp) who can give you pros and cons and suggest alternatives like Xonvea, perhaps

I took it from around 11 weeks with no problems- would have taken it sooner if the doctors didn’t insist I try every single other medication first. I would ask them to give you an IV of it first and fluids. It didn’t work for me until I was hydrated and had the medication through IV.
I did have awful headaches in the pregnancy I took it in so not sure if it caused them or just hormones.
My two year old is beautifully healthy, I would say the benefits out way the risk when you can’t function for sickness.

I took it and all was fine… the type of pregnancy you are going through is nothing short of traumatic and ultimately some people need medication to get through it. It was the only thing that made it bearable for me. Good luck, it’s going to be ok.

RobertJohnsonsShoes · 03/11/2025 20:00

i took it. I would’ve died without eating for the whole of my pregnancy.

Labadore · 03/11/2025 20:02

I took it too. I know it's scary. I will say it gave me dreadful constipation though! But totally worth it

SwirlyShirly · 03/11/2025 21:18

I took it from I think 6 or 8 weeks. One very seriously strapping 7yo lad is safely tucked up in bed with no mouth or pallet issues. I feel for you, severe sickness is awful, I still have emetephobia all these years later.

Boymum93 · 03/11/2025 21:45

Thanks so much for all your responses - I feel a lot better about taking it now. I’ve already tried cyclizine, metaclopramide, Xonvea and prochoperazine - really hoping this one works

Good luck OP. It's the only thing that worked for me but it was a total game changer

DoAWheelie · 03/11/2025 22:44

There is also a risk to your child if you are severely dehydrated and unable to keep down nutrition. Being sick also raises cortisol levels in your body and cortisol has a negative effect on the baby too.

You can't weigh the risks of taking drug vs no drug. It's the risk of the drug vs the risk of the untreated medical problems.

Yes yes to the constipation, do make sure you get a bulk of senna or whatever alongside it - I’ve physically not been the same since that but still no regrets, it was a life saver.
