Waters Breaking- Slowly?

I've just stood up and walked into my kitchen and on the way felt a small gush, I thought oh cr*p maybe I've leaked and accidentally wee'd myself a little... then I stood there doing a few bits in the kitchen and maybe a minute or two later another small gush happened. Again I thought maybe I needed a wee but when I tried stopping anymore coming out, I felt like I couldnt stop it.

I went to the toilet as thought maybe it was wee or discharge as I have had quite a bit of discharge lately but couldn't see any discharge on my underwear. My underwear was very damp and then some had gone onto my leggings too.

Does this sound like my waters going slowly? With my first, it was like in the movies and was just one large gush so not sure whether I'm over thinking it or not 🤔

waters don’t always go in one big gush. Can be released more slowly. Call your triage and get them to take a swab to check if it’s fluid - don’t wait incase of infection. Does it have a smell?
I would say I’ve also had increase in wee/discharge right at the end and often feel damp but it’s not a gush at all.

My waters went very slowly with 2 of my dc. I never had a gush like the show on tv. My midwife described it as the head plugging the hole and everytime the head moves a little more comes out.
Bizarrely with 1 of my other dc my waters didn’t actually go until literally a minute before delivery so every birth is different.

My first baby was a big gush but my second was a slow release of water as you describe. They had to break the hind waters later on. I didn’t have any contractions so went back to bed. The second small gush a couple of hours later contained meconium so I had to go straight in. So keep an eye for that. Good luck!

I've had a small trickle one more time but wnough to wet my underwear again, seems to be after ive sat down and stood up after so long, also after each 'gush', I get bad cramping in my stomach and back then it seems to fade. Going to see how I go over the next few hours and consider ringing triage if anything else or more happens.

Also after each gush I get really hot and nauseous too, not sure if it's because I start getting anxious as to whether it's possibly time for labour or not but will see how I go.

My waters went like this too although after a sweep. The midwife initially said maybe she had used too much lube! How many weeks are you?

If you are in any way worried then call your maternity unit. (Obviously you know that) All my dc have been born 40+ weeks.

AmberBeaker · 31/10/2025 18:36

On my first it was a big obvious gush. On my second it also was, but 2 weeks before that I had a very convincing leak that I really really thought was my waters, got grandparents over to mind eldest, went to hospital, and it was just very thin discharge... false alarm. But they really really didn't mind checking me in the hospital they didn't make me feel silly for coming in by mistake at all.

MatriarchCaz · 31/10/2025 20:22

At 36+2 I really would go to triage to get it checked x

AmberBeaker · 31/10/2025 20:25

Adding that they have pads they use to check if it's amniotic fluid vs urine/discharge. It's a common thing to be unsure. Discharge can be really thin and watery in the final weeks
Defo go in and get a check for reassurance.

I would go to triage, they can swab and check instantly!
