Ultrasound showed a subchorionic hematoma- feeling anxious as midwife said it increases risk of miscarriage

I had a scan today at 6w4d, we saw baby and heartbeat measuring on track but the midwife said I have a subchorionic hematoma and called it a threatened miscarriage. I’m waiting to get a script for progesterone which I’ll hopefully get tomorrow evening. In the meantime she’s said to take it easy and no strenuous activity or heavy lifting. I’m trying not to worry but hearing the words threatened miscarriage really scared me especially after having a miscarriage a few months ago. Just wondering if anyone has any advice or reassurance?

hi,
I also had one found at my 7 week scan at the hospital but I’d already had a few instances where I’d had a some bleeding. scared me when they said it increases the risk of miscarriage as I’d had two before.
but I think they have to tell you, but they said the same to me, avoid heavy lifting things like that, rest as much as possible which I couldn’t do either with having a 3 and 1 year old already.
but just for reassurance I am now 24 weeks and never had a big bleed after than scan again and by my 12 week scan the hematoma had completely gone!
baby is doing well. but try to rest up as much as you can, while you can!

I had one diagnosed after I began bleeding st 11 weeks. I was told to go away and carry on as normal. I'd already had previous losses so was convinced this would be the same. Had brown spotting for a fortnight and then was pretty surprised that all was well and it had gone by the first scan.

I lost twins at the end of my first trimester and then when I got pregnant with my son I had bleeding at 11 weeks and was told I had a SCH as well. Scary and anxious especially after having a loss beforehand. The risk of miscarriage increases slightly but there are so many things that increase risk factors for miscarriage that doesn’t mean you’ll have one. I know it’s hard :( can they re scan you in a week or two to check on it?

All worked out okay in the end, He is now 3 years old.

I should add that that was 13 years ago and I'm not convinced the carry on as normal advice was the right advice as I've heard others be told to rest....so please don't take that as advice from me. I just wanted to reassure you that it doesn't ways end badly.

I did but I wasn’t prescribed anything and I went on to have a healthy pregnancy.

I had one with my daughter found at my 6 week scan. I never had any bleeding and it had gone by itself by my 12 week scan.

I had bleeding all the way through my pregnancy. My 12 week scan showed a small haemotoma but then I had a really heavy bleed at 23 weeks and ended up staying in hospital for a couple of days. That's when they saw that the haemotoma had got much bigger. I had scans every week but it never got any smaller. Thankfully, I had a healthy baby and everything was fine in the end so I just wanted to reassure you that it can all work out okay.

I had a decent sized one and whilst some SCH can result in miscarriage, most don’t and it’s more dependent on position and size. Ie if it’s to the side of the sac it’s much less likely to cause an issue than if it’s above. Above and larger than the pregnancy means when it bleeds it could take the sac with it.

mine was to the side and medium to large. Caused no issues for the pregnancy but I did bleed from like week 6-13 and then one larger bleed at week 15.

Hope you’re doing ok and have had a few rescans since which have given some reassurance it’s resolving/reabsorbing x

@Xwx1010 thank you so much, they said they would re scan me in two weeks when I’m just over 8 weeks. They’ve also started me on progesterone. From looking at the scan photo it looks to me like it’s over to the side of the sac so that’s reassuring. I actually haven’t had any bleeding aside from a little bit of spotting for a few days around 5 weeks. Just going to take it easy for now and hopefully all will be ok!

@JasmineBloom ask about size and position next time perhaps! The browner the bleeding the more likely it’s solidifying and resolving itself - so definitely rest up. x

I had a scan at 7 weeks that showed baby was measuring over a week behind and I also had a SCH. I did end up miscarrying. (I had 4 early losses all at 6 weeks, but currently I'm 11 weeks pregnant and all ok).

I am saying this as, I would say if your baby is measuring on time with a heartbeat, that's the best sign that things are more likely to be ok. There's no indication of slow growth and that's great.

JasmineBloom · 31/10/2025 14:20

@AprilManor oh I’m so sorry for your losses. So pleased to hear everything is going well for you this time. Yes baby was measuring 6w4d at the scan which was lined up exactly with how far along I thought I was. Just have to hope now that things are still going good in two weeks time. It’s going to feel like forever until that next scan!
