Why is water and teeth brushing so gross when pregnant?

Hi, I have horrific food and smell aversions, bad taste, nausea etc etc during my pregnancy. The worst is drinking water and brushing teeth. Does anyone have any insight into why these two things make me heave so badly? I’m desperately thirsty but no form of liquid can get into me without my stomach revolting. Lennon and ginger waters are instantly rejected. And is the tooth brushing problem from the toothpaste or the act of touching your teeth? I’m so depressed by it all and don’t knkw why any of this is happening. Any formal advice online just says … hormones….

I had really bad sickness with my first. Teeth brushing was a huge issue. DS is 25 in a couple of weeks and I still gag when cleaning my teeth. It was never a problem before I got pregnant.

Showering always made me sick too!

DD is 24 and I still remember the sight of the toothbrush making me heave. I didn’t even have to touch it.

No idea why it happens OP but I hugely sympathise.

The only thing that helped me was diet coke. I followed a lady online that had chronic nausea and she said diet coke was a life saver and she was right. The relief is short lived and you obviously cannot only drink diet coke but I usually saved having it till the afternoon and didn't have any coffee or tea (not that I wanted it). Anyway, it might give you a little window to drink a glass or two of water.

Thanks, all. I guess it will remain a mystery. Solidarity to all who sail in this gross yucky ship.

My gag reflex turned into whatever the opposite of a super power is, and not only did I have to stop going to the gym in my workplace (I was pregnant in winter somewhere very wet, and had always had to get most of my exercise indoors) I couldn’t even walk past the door because the sweaty smell was unbearable.

I feel you OP! I was in the same boat for the whole of the first trimester and I couldn’t stand the smell of literally, anything! I’m much better now at 17 weeks, still feel a little nauseous but it’s not nearly like it was a few weeks back (when I was vomiting multiple times a day) I hope things improve for you too. It really does get you down! ❤️

I second Diet Coke! Was the thing I could tolerate most a few weeks back. I did manage to drink fizzy water with an in ice cube and slice of lemon too, that wasn’t too bad!

Everyone is like i bet you can't wait for a glass of wine. Nope im looking forward to brushing my teeth without gagging or vomiting!

With water, isnt it that we evolved to avoid it as it could have been dirty/contaminated and make us ill? Same for fresh veggies.
