What to do? Spotting at 14 weeks at the hospital but they can’t scan.

Feel so scared! Not only is it my birthday, I’m 14 weeks pregnant and spotting. I’m in hospital in a different county, so different NHS trust - waiting and waiting. I have been here for hours. They have decided that I am not urgent and it looks like I won’t be seen by a gynaecologist until 2am and even then, they can’t perform a scan because every hospital has no scanner facilities available until Monday. What are you meant to do if you are potentially having a miscarriage on a Friday evening?! That’s an agonising almost 3 day wait. I think it’s actually the same for most NHS trusts. Has anyone been in this position before? Do I just have the most miserable anxiety-inducing weekend? Apparently the most they can do here at the hospital is check the cervical opening so even then it won’t be definitive. I have emailed my midwife and my usual hospital but the EPAU isn’t open until Monday.

I'm so sorry you're having this worry. I was in a very similar situation, nothing could be done to check on my baby so all you can do is distract yourself.

Fwiw first time it was a polyps on my cervix and second time it remained unexplained but I had two healthy babies and I wish you the same outcome.

Thank you, that’s so kind. I am so anxious. I’ve had to discharge myself because it was inconclusive’ if an on-call gynae was going to get round to seeing me at all. Gosh what a state women’s public health is in.

I’m sorry you are feeling worried today. Fingers crossed for you.

yes I have been in this position before, well similar to - I’ve never been to a and e for pregnancy related issues as I knew fully well they would only refer me to epau or maternity assessment so I may as well go straight there, or I’d just be sitting in hospital waiting for them to open. I’ve had more than one occasion where I’ve had to wait days and weeks to find out if I was still pregnant or not and it’s not easy. Even being referred to a fully open maternity assessment unit with a history of losses and active problematic symptoms is no guarantee of being offered any type of examination, treatment or scans. As I have found more than once. The general vibe is - there isn’t anything we can do, the outcome will be what it will be and scans don’t show anything particularly useful.

Hopefully it will be okay for you.

Yes I've been in this exact position on a Thursday evening before the Easter 4 day bank holiday weekend. Very long agonising wait but all was fine despite 2 hours of heavy bleeding and clots.

Also had spotting in my first pregnancy and have 2 healthy girls.

I really hope the time passes quickly and you can get a scan on Monday and all is well.

Hi, it is so frightening, I’ve also had spitting/bleeding in pregnancy. My obstetrician told me that a lot of women have bleeding, it’s common, so try to take some comfort from that if you can. I had a huge gushing bleed at 12 weeks, carried on, but slowing down, for 5-6 weeks and my baby is now 17 years old so keep calm and try to rest this weekend

Thanks l for you inputs and sharing what must have been terrifying stories. The bleeding is worse this morning 😢😢 on my way to another A&E

Ok! It’s all okay: I had to go to a private hospital in London. Some sort of unknown bleed: but baby is ok. It’s such a scary time. I asked a GP friend who works in a hospital and apparently they just don’t scan anyone over a Friday evening through Sunday anymore - even if you’re bleeding.
