ARGH!!! I am 17 weeks +1 on my 3rd pregnancy, i have suffered from hayfever for 4yrs now and this is the first time i have been pregnant and had it at the same time and MY GOD what a nightmare!

i am at the end of the my tether - and to top it all, i seem to have nasal congestion as well! great!

Every night for the last 2 weeks i have woken up no later than 5am (last night was 3.50am) and i can not go back to sleep. At first it was just pregnancy insomnia (again, i have neve suffered this before) but now i wake up with a bone dry mouth and really sore lips as i can't breathe!

Annoyingly, i was just starting to get over the tiredness and enjoy this pregnancy!

I am lucky that my DD (4 and a half) will watch high school musical in the afternoon so i can kip at about 1.30ish before i have to get DS for school (although sleep too long and i am like a zombie).

My GP has recommended some homeopathic stuff to take which i will be getting tomorrow. Anyone else had hayfever badly in pregnancy? I've done everything i can (from vaseline on my nostrils, wet cotton wool on my eye and sitting in the car with the aircon on so the pollen filter works!).

HELP!! I am seriously going to have an emotions explosion soon if i don't get sleep!

sorry ladies

i had this when i was pregnant (little boy is now 4 months) i used to suffer with hayfever ridiculously bad when i was younger then it tailed off, when i was preggers the snuffly nose came about this time of year actually thought it was a cold then the cracked lips came, dry mouth, constantly not being able to breathe and guess what it didnt go away so i assumed it was hayfever - after the summer it didnt go away. i developed an allergy which apprently is quite common during pregnancy and it was only when i was 8 months i felt remotely better.
so hayfever season has started again and i am as right as rein (probably jinxed myself now)

i really hope you both feel better soon i feel your pain xx

I have awful hayfever + contact lenses, so not a good combination. My doctor prescribed beconase nasal spray and piriton tablets with my first pregnancy, now it is my second and Im in the same boat I am trying to just manage on beconase...so far it is bearable...just...

tissy · 05/06/2008 20:47

get an over the counter nasal steroid spray- it's not dangerous at all to the baby, and will be very effective.

Chocolateteapot · 05/06/2008 20:50

My doctor prescribed Beconase spray with DS after taking one look at the state I was in.

However I found last year Lloyds Allergy Reliever. It is a little machine that you stick up your nose and it turns you into Rudoloph with a bright red nose. It is the same as the more expensive Medinose, which I think it says is safe in pregnancy. Well worth checking with Lloyds if it is safe to use, I've found I don't really need anti-histamines or nasal sprays since using it (I've had horrendous hayfecver since I was 2 so this is a huge success for me). Google Medinose, it will explain it.

Please don't suffer any longer. Beconase nasal spray is fine in pregnancy. I've been told this by three different doctors and a midwife.

thanks guys, i will be buying the electrically charge tampons to shove up my nose tomorrow - they do it for £20 with an air purifier too!! Yay!!

Piriton and/or phenergan are also okay.

colacubes · 05/06/2008 22:12

Also there is a wax you can get from boots, totally organic helps trap pollen before it gets inside the nose, helps me.

I never uffered from HF until after my dd was born 2 years ago, this is my 3rd season of hell, I feel like someone has poured concrete in my head.

MimieD · 06/06/2008 10:37

Dh has been suffering from hayfever every spring / summer since I met him 13 years ago but this year he bought an acupressure band from Boots and together with the balm as mentioned by colacubes, he has had no symptoms at all this year! Worth a try www.hay-band.co.uk/

Libra1975 · 06/06/2008 11:00

Midwife yesterday told me that both piriton and clarityn are ok. Unfort I have problems trying to stay awake at the moment anyway so I think these would put me in a coma 24/7.

colacubes - do you mean haymax? Someone has bought me this but on one side it says fine for pregnant women and on the other it says consult GP!!!

As for beconase it does say:
"This medicine is not recommended for use in pregnancy unless considered essential by your doctor. Seek medical advice from your doctor. "
So anyone thinking of using it should talk to their GP first.

I had awful hayfever during pregnancy and my lovely consultant swore to me that Flexonase nasal spray was totally safe so I used that + opticrom drops and it worked a treat. My DS doesn't seem to have grown two noses as a result or anything. x

PortAndLemon · 06/06/2008 13:20

You can take beconase nasal spray and opticrom (or generic equivalent) eyedrops for sure (should talk to doctor first, but he/she will look it up in the big book and tell you it's OK). You can also almost certainly take the older anti-histamines (not the non-drowsy ones... although there's no actual evidence that there's anything wrong with those either).

cheerfulvicky · 06/06/2008 22:54

I've found Pollenna (which is a homeopathic tablet made up of 3 different anti-hayfever things) really helps. It's safe for use in pregnancy as well... I'd been suffering horribly and finally dug it out, and it's made things so much easier.

MHB1 · 18/06/2008 15:18

i bought the Qu-Chi acupressure band for my hayfever after my acupuncturist recommended it. absolutely love it and think it looks really trendy too. its saved me a fortune on antihistamines!!! i highly recommend it! the other alternative is get pregnant again because my symptoms just disappeared when i was pregnant!! (i bought it at www.allergyband.com)

zoejeanne · 18/06/2008 15:24

I suffer hayfever too and on my first pregnancy. My doctor has also said it's fine to use a nasal spray, but not herbal tablets I used to use. So far the spray, plus nightly and morning lie downs with boots cooling eye masks are keeping me sane. I hope it gets better soon for you - it's no fun!
