Eat More Fat?!

Hi all,

hope everyone is well.

2 weeks ago I went for a scan for lack of movement, I had a very, well horrible sonographer who made me feel less of a human, woman, mother, because my BMI doesn’t fall in to the most inaccurate science tick box of “healthy”.

she randomly asked “what’s your diet like” mid scan. I said “very good thank you, and yours?”

she followed it up with “your deepest pool of amniotic fluid is 0.6cm higher than normal, you probably have gestational diabetes”

i could discuss the ins and outs of the rest of the scan but I’m letting PALS deal with that.

I had my GD test last week - I do not have diabetes, gestational or otherwise.

so I had a repeat scan today for the fluid which is now only 0.4cm over “normal” sitting at 8.4cm. However, I was told that baby girls weight had fallen to the 12 centile to where it should be at 26 weeks.

The midwife told me to “eat more fat” not like pizza and McDonalds, but like avocados, full fat yoghurt etc. has anyone done this and has it helped?

I eat a lot of fruit, veg, salad and pasta with a protein source but I guess I don’t eat fat other than from cheese.

you can’t win can you, two weeks ago I was a fatty, diagnosed with GD from a fluid measurement and now I’m not eating enough fat 😂😂

@AiRoo , the sonographer did not brand you a fatty.
I don't know why you added the emojis, because your comment wasn't funny.

The remark on GD will have been made as a trained professional. Advising someone to eat good fats when pregnant seems like normal nutritional advice.

@Mushroo nope, not in the slightest….. my whole post has been taken out of context.

my wife had GD during her second pregnancy, I would never call her a fattie in a month of Sundays.

as for the first sonographer, she asked OUT OF THE BLUE what my diet is like and said “I’m guessing you have GD based on the measurement of your deepest pool” after me telling her my diet is fine. She judged me based on my appearance and her manager that I spoke to agreed.

for what it’s worth I gained weight due to 20 years on anti psychotic medication due the trauma of being kidnapped and assaulted by a taxi driver on my hendo…… she judged me on my diet when my BMI is higher due to no dietary reason.

AND lest we forget, I was ACTUALLY asking advice for helping my baby girl gain weight due to her decline to the 12th centile.

wow, you’re quickly reminded sometimes how actually horrible mumsnet can be. I GENUINELY wish I’d never bothered.

I guess she's seen a lot of women with GD and this thing about the deepest pool can be a symptom, it wasn't GD so that's great.

Why does it matter that she made the comment about the depth of the pool after you said your diet was fine? Diet doesn’t cause GD but a deeper than normal pool is literally an indicator for it so the question clearly wasn’t “out of the blue” but was linked to what she saw on screen. It isn’t unreasonable to suggest potential dietary changes in advance of any GTT to someone that has a potential indicator, because the changes won’t do any harm but have the potential to do a lot of good if you did actually have it. Women with BMIs of 20 would get the same dietary advice because it’s not about weight, but about the food you’re eating and the way you can control the symptoms through diet.

If she was being otherwise judgmental and vile I can understand why you might jump there, but it seems like you’re ascribing intention to her based on how you felt rather than the medical reality.

My baby was on the 11th percentile at one point so I've had to focus on healthy fats too. I don't eat fish, so snacked on brazil nuts and almonds a lot. I also added sunflower seeds and walnuts to smoothies and porridge, which I had for breakfast most days.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy 🥰

I thought gestational diabetes was down to the placenta not forming properly.. Nothing to do with weight, there was a lady in my work who had the condition and she was very petite with a family history of gd.
Anyway baby could be measuring small because of genetics, issues with the placenta or diet.. It may be you are eating plenty but there is an underlying issue affecting the baby.
For now I would just increase healthy fats like they said avocado's, nuts, cheese, fatty fish like salmon and tuna and see if that helps.

Nope. Wrong

Edited

Two different sonographers. You missed the point also.

I was being tongue in cheek about the fatty comment.

people on Mumsnet are soooooo highly strung

Full fat yogurt with jam or blueberries etc in is lovely. Maybe add some double cream to mashed pot, stews, soups, curries etc
Whole fat milk in cereal

Are you having any further scans? I think it's likely they've mismeasured. Scan measurements are so inaccurate

GloriaMonday · 23/10/2025 18:34

@AiRoo , you mentioned a sonographer and a midwfe.

AiRoo · 23/10/2025 18:39

@Keroppi thank you very much, for actually focusing on what I was asking for in my post. I will add those tips in for my diet. Yes another in 2 weeks and then depending on her weight then, maybe more? Very worried about it.

@GloriaMonday they did both roles, both women were midwife’s and also sonographors. Very common. That’s just semantics. I was making light of the fact two weeks ago I was accused of having a bad diet, two weeks later told to eat more fat. Excuse me for finding that amusing. People have taken it waaaaaaay deeper than needed.
