Hi there,

I had my 16 week appointment today with the midwife (currently 16 weeks + 1 day), and she told me my blood type is o-negative. She took bloods so they can test too see what my baby is which can take a few weeks to come back. She really put me at ease as understandably, I started to get quite worried thinking what does this mean for my baby now?

I've done a bit of my own research on this and the general consensus online is that as long as I have this anti-D injections it is highly effective in stopping any anti bodies my body may create if the baby is positive blood group.

Just wondering if anyone on here has been through the same thing?

TIA- a worried FT mum

I’m O-ve and did all that - all pretty straightforward. Don’t worry
you’re a universal donor so can donate blood to anyone but can only receive O-ve - it’s good to know. The blood donation service will be interested to hear from you!

What blood type is babies father?

It’s fine. If your baby is rhesus negative too you don’t need to do anything (do you know the baby’s father’s blood type - if he’s negative the baby is guaranteed to be negative).

if baby is positive you have the anti d.

It’s only a problem if it’s not picked up.

And it doesn’t mean anything for the baby at all - the person at risk is you if you were to develop antibodies which could affect a future pregnancy - but as it’s been picked up there’s really no issue.
