Hi ya on 2nd baby and understand that this little one may not fully engage until just before labour but....in my maternity notes from todays 35 wk appt, my MW has put under the 'engagement' section (4/5ths m)what does the 4/5ths mean and what does the letter 'm' mean?

Obviously I have 4/5th left to go before baby's head is fully engaged or 1/5th? I feel stupid asking especially as this is my 2nd child, but really can't remember for the life of me!

4/5 to go before head fully engaged (1/5 means fully engaged)-means that 1/5 of babies head is not palpable as down below pubic bone line.

not sure what m stands for... something to do with how baby lieing?

I'm confused about this too.

My MW put I was 2/5 engaged on my notes on Monday (I'm 37weeks) and I also cannot remember whether that's engaged a lot or a little

So I asked on here, and was told 5/5 is fully engaged?

I think maybe different MW's have different ways of rating how engaged you using this fifths method

But either way I don't think I've helped have I - I should have asked my MW what she meant but I didn't read the notes til I'd left. There was talk of an early arrival though!

4/5ths engaged means that most of the baby's head is in the pelvis with only 1/5th left to drop down. I have no idea what m means and I'm a m/w Must be some code that I've not come across before.

Some midwives will talk about 5ths palpable ratehr than 5ths engaged. This is confusing because it makes everything opposite. So 4/5ths palpable would mean that 4/5ths of hte baby's head can be felt above the pelvis and only 1/5th is engaged.

Even in our trust in the normal handheld notes you are meant to write 5ths engaged, but if the woman comes into hospital - in the add on hospital sheets we are meant to put 5ths palpable.

So is that true for "relation to brim" too? My notes say 2/5s last week and 4/5s this week... but other people have told me 4/5s means baby is only 1/5 in... So confusing!

Thanks guys for the comments. I found this confusing with my first and stil don't know what 'm' means.

My midwife said 'getting there now' so still confused.

Time will tell, 35 wks today so just gunna wait it out till next appointment in a few weeks. lol!

Sketchi - especially as its your 2nd baby I wouldn't pay too much attention to it. 2nd babies often engage later, some not until labour starts. Plus they can engage and then bob back out.
