Hi,I'm 26+4 weeks pregnant and also have a 10 month old son,and for the past few days I've been getting lots of BH. I assumed I'd start feeling them earlier due to having already been pregnant quite recently, but on Monday night I was getting them for about an hour, every 4 mins exactly. They were quite strong and fairly painful, enough to make me sit up and take notice, if you know what I mean! I couldn't get back to sleep while I was getting them and also had period-type pain and while the BH was happening, I also had a bit of pain in my right hip area and lower back. Also breathlessness as if they were taking my breath away, then as soon as the BH subsided, so did all the pain and breathlessness.

I had a very quick labour with my son (45mins active labour,4 hours in total) and even with him (my first labour) I only had mildly painful tightenings for the first couple of hours, I did get lots of BH but later on than with this one, I think.

Is it normal to have so many BH at only 26weeks, that are painful as well? And what about them coming on every 4 mins? The night before (sunday night) I'd been getting a few painful ones too but not as regular, and I don't remember having many last night - the baby was just moving about loads and it was hurting when she moved/turned.

Was I right to ignore the BH or should I keep an eye on them/tell my midwife?

You could ring labour ward, as you could have a water infection that can mimic early labour, and be quite painful too.

Wont hurt to ring, eh?

you absolutely should tell your midwife. Braxton Hicks should not be painful and felt as period pain at 26 weeks should not be ignored. Mention it to your midwife at your next appointment and ring her if it happens again.

If you have more than four of them in an hour you need to ring the labour ward. However before you do.....take a big cold drink of water - dehydration can cause and exacerbate them.

Having said I have them every evening for two hours without fail and they hurt like hell but are not progressive. I've seen the midwives and they said I just had an irritable uterus.

Then they tried to tell me that it was great because it meant my labour would probably be really short this time with all the practice
