Xonvea + anything else...?

Currently in first trimester of second pregnancy and started struggling with nausea and vomiting very early on. Had HG in first pregnancy. Been on Xonvea since 5 weeks, 2 tablets at bedtime, which seemed to control things to a manageable level but things have now seemed to ramp up at 9 weeks and I’m feeling horrendous/vomming again etc. I tried a third pill but it made me feel like I’d been run over by a bus (no way could I have driven in that state!) and I need to function as I have a 6 yo. Does anyone take anything alongside xonvea that doesn’t wipe you out? Feeling sceptical as everything is an antihistamine 😂 Maybe I just ride it out a few weeks.

Hey there! I've tried Xonvea, Cyclazine, Prochlorperazine but all not really helped much and vomiting multiple times a day. I'm 15 weeks now and Doctors have prescribed me Ondansetron on top of Xonvea to try. First day of taking it.. I think it's a second line medication so stronger?! I'm hoping it starts to help me because it's totally debilitating isn't it. Have you asked your doctor for other options? Take care xx

I'm on xonvea and ondansetron since 7 weeks. Also xonvea made me like a zombie but only lasted a week then my body adjusted so maybe persevere with he extra tablet if you can.

You can get a higher dose of xonvea which might help but it is bad for drowsiness. Ondansetron is very effective. I took xonvea, ondansetron, prochlorperazine and cyclizine through the first trimester of my second pregnancy and managed to avoid hospital admissions (did have one day visit for IV fluids but only once!) that time whereas I had loads in my first pregnancy. Also, omeprazole is an anti acid with few side effects but can reduce the nausea or at least reduce stomach acid and make being sick a bit less awful.

@OaktreetYeah I’m thinking of trying a third tablet maybe later in the afternoon as it doesn’t matter so much if I’m a bit drowsy in the evening… just need to function in the daytime etc for daughter. Will chat to GP on Mon for sure xx

Cyclazine helped. Ondansetron is better but gave me other side effects.

I was hoping my second pregnancy would be easier and that I’d enjoy it… definitely not the case. I know how lucky I am but fml it’s depressing feeling this way x

Yes I was the same, only got it much later first time when I got heartburn due to the size of my bump. Second time I was under a consultant specialising in HG and she recommended I have it for the sickness from the start and I do think it helped. It’s all about getting the right combination. I hope you manage to find it, HG is so brutal. With ondansetron some GPs are still reluctant to prescribe before 12 weeks due to risk of cleft palate, but pregnancy sickness support have good advice on that - the increase in risk is tiny, the study that showed it was not very robust, and by 9 weeks the face is mostly formed so you’re probably out of the riskiest period anyway.

Nomnomnew · 11/10/2025 20:46

Oh yes and for ondansetron - make sure they prescribe you a laxative like lactulose as well - it’s very constipating and on top of the normal pregnancy constipation and effects of dehydration it can be absolutely awful so a gentle laxative to help avoid that is a must.

I had a similar medicine (different name but same ingredients) when I was pregnant with DS and the OB advised me to take it in the evening rather than the morning. The anti-sickness effect still worked the next day fairly well (tbf I had really bad HG and nothing worked really well but it worked the best) but the sleepiness side effect was got out of the way in the night so was able to feel almost normal in the daytime.
